About Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue - steak house in Hartford, Connecticut
Local BBQ outpost serving smoked meats & sandwiches, plus comfort sides, in a low-key setting.
Customer Review Summary
Bear's Smokehouse Barbecue primarily operates as a self-serve cafeteria-style restaurant. It caters largely to UConn students, though service can feel disorganized. The food quality varies; some dishes are praised, like the juicy brisket and delicious sweet barbecue sauce, while others, like the burnt ends and ribs, received criticism for texture and flavor. The sides are limited, and some diners found certain items overly salty or dry. With staff described as friendly and a nice atmosphere, some guests have mentioned a specific staff member, Richard, positively. Overall, while experiences can be hit or miss, many are inclined to return to try other menu options.

This is mainly a self-serve cafeteria style place. So look over the menu before arriving. No one greets you. There is a smaller Bar with dine in to the right of entering. Clearly serving the Uconn students is their forte. Food was pretty good. The burnt ends I did not care for the taste of so much brown sugar, but the inside was nice. The brisket was not too hot. The sides seemed limited with no veggie option, but collard greens. My son's ribs were dry. Loads of tables for sitting. There seemed to be a lot of take out happening. I would try again buying other options to eat.

Got the half rack of ribs and it was decent. The corn was a bit dry and the flavor was not too exciting. The sweet potato mash is ultra sweet if you like that. The sandwich was a bit overly salty. They have a lot of people working, but could be better organized when ordering food. More often than not the guy would be too busy to serve the sides for the next customer in line.

Very nice staff, good atmosphere. In terms of food I only tried the spud potato with chicken and it was decently priced. But this is SO SALTY. I feel like I’m going to get fat after eating this and I have been chugging water. Update I think I have diarrhea from this

The food was absolutely amazing. The sweet barbecue sauce was very well. The brisket was juicy , the cornbread was amazing with the honey butter. The baked beans were so freaking good. I could not stop eating them. the macaroni and cheese was plain. But who cares rest was great

After Glow Hartford, I wanted to find a quick bite to eat nearby. Once I saw Bear’s Smokehouse I knew I had to stop in (I’ve heard it’s a bbq staple in CT)! Was a quick 5 minute walk from the Connecticut Convention Center. I ordered the combination platter including two meats and two sides $23 (and added cornbread $2.50). The ribs were my favorite — the meat literally fell right off the bone, and of course, loved their mac and cheese. The coleslaw was a bit vinegary for my taste, but other than that a great meal! I definently want to head back in to try more of their menu.

Complete disappointment. I had a pulled pork sandwich the pork when I found it amongst all the fat was tasty but the meat to fat ratio was quite disportioncate. Unfortunately I won’t be going back. It is a great footprint and service was okay friendly.

Just want to say first that Richard the bus boy, what great guy! He made sure we had everything we needed and more. Make sure you treat him right cause he’s very valuable. Now the food is always great very flavorful and the meat is always moist. But today everything was just room temperature and the chips in the nachos were stale. Not the most pleasant thing but we’ll definitely still come back. THANKS RICHARD :)

Waiter was Jessica, very pleasant lady. Immediately seated in a booth. Pickles were served with vinegar, tasty FIRST! So sad they do not MAKE corn bread at this location sadly! Jessica (waiter) was very nice and kept checking in. The burger was tasty ! The steak taco delicious !! The fries were too BURNT and crispy and THE crispy which killed the flavor. We informed the waiter Jessica was so kind to bring out a different selection of fries. I love that there were displayed napkins, no need to ask!
