About J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood Glastonbury - steak house in Hartford, Connecticut

Fine-dining-style establishment offering classic steakhouse fare, cocktails & a big menu of sides.

Customer Review Summary

The restaurant J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood in Glastonbury is known for excellent service and a pleasant atmosphere. While the steak and ribs receive high praise, non-red meat options may disappoint in terms of value. Food temperatures upon arrival are good, but some dishes, like the salmon and asparagus, lack seasoning. Drink prices are reasonable, with a variety of options. Desserts offer both basic and interesting choices, with the chocolate velvet cake and vanilla bean crème brûlée being standout items. Many reviews highlight the great service from attentive staff, though there are instances of mixed-quality food, particularly with seafood and cooking levels of steak. Overall, while the ambiance and service shine, food experiences can vary significantly, warranting tempered expectations for non-steak dishes.

I DID NOT HAVE STEAK. Ok, so this review is from the pov of someone who shouldn't be eating red meat. Service and Ambiance The service was the best part. Arguably, the best service I've received at a restaurant. The atmosphere was great as well. Great place for a date to impress. The Food: If you are not going for the steak or ribs, or just the drinks, temper your expectations. There aren't many non red meat options that are worth the price. The temperature of the food was sizzling when it arrived at our table. I had the salmon, which wasn't bad, but wasn't anything to run home about either. The asparagus and potato wedges for the sides were a bit bland. The asparagus could have used a sauce to compliment it. Also, we didn't ask, but having salt and black pepper on the table would have been good. My wife had the blackened chicken pasta, which was great except for the chicken being burnt. She didn't finish it, and they removed it from the bill. Drinks: The drinks prices weren't bad and they had many options. Desserts: Dessert options were a mix of basic and interesting options, and the prices were ok. They also had dessert beverages.

Insanely good. Love the ambiance and dim lighting. I am a mock-tail drinker; the cucumber lemonade is the best mock-tail I’ve ever had because it wasn’t sweet and sugary. Just fresh and crisp.

I felt obligated to leave a review after having such a wonderful dining experience at JGilbert's this week. We were celebrating my husband's birthday and decided to try JGilbert's for the first time. Everything was perfect. We were seated promptly in a very comfortable little table. The dining room feels comfortable and is not too crowded with the other tables, which I really enjoyed. Our server Lisa was absolutely phenomenal and very attentive to our table. She made great recommendations and always seemed to be right there when needed. Thank you Lisa!! The highlight was the food! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and perfectly prepared. The strip steak was phenomenal! The best steak I've had out in quite some time. Thank you to everyone at JGilbert's who made our visit so perfect. We will certainly be back!

So I’ve heard about this place word of mouth so we decided to give it a try. I booked it for last night, a cold Tuesday night. They only open at 4:00 and at 4:30 I was so shocked that they had so many people waiting. It’s definitely a popular place. The service was nice, Stephen had good customer service. I do wish we had gotten our waters filled up but other than that no complaints. Now on to the food- I ended up getting a 8oz center cut filter mignon i give it a 8.5/10 it was a good cut of meat I just don’t think I’m a fan of wood grilled/fired meat. My boyfriend got the 18oz cowboy cut his rating was an 8/10. The sides were 10/10 the mushrooms with truffle butter were honestly the best mushrooms I’ve ever had! The scallops were okay a little underwhelming. The mashed potatoes were good too and I added some of the truffle butter on them that brought out some flavor! The bread was good and what was interesting was the pastrami spiced butter that they gave with it that was tasty. The drinks were good. The desserts were great my boyfriend tried the chocolate velvet cake and he really enjoyed it. It’s very chocolatey and rich. The vanilla bean crème brûlée was amazing! Over all we would go back to try some other things.

Awesome food, service, and ambiance. Their steaks and sides are always our favorites. The onion rigs were too thick for our liking, but everything else was very tasty.

Came for my birthday and from the moment I walk in everything was perfect. The organization of the staff, the friendliness and the welcoming atmosphere. First time visiting and I will definitely be back. Great experience. My amazing waitress was Taylor. She is the absolute best. Gillian

Took my wife here for our anniversary. 4pm service was nice. The server was phenomenal. The seating was cute and intimate. The food was sub par unfortunately. Shrimp was starting to go bad ruining the other shrimp. Steak was recommended cooked medium, but was more overdone. Food honestly was sub par. Overall, for a check of a total of 200$ for two people, we expected much better food, and not to feel a bit ill in the stomach the rest of the evening.
