About C&W Steakhouse - steak house in Charlotte, North Carolina

Customer Review Summary

C&W Steakhouse receives mixed reviews from diners. Service is often cited as slow and underwhelming, particularly during busy times like Valentine's Day, with reports of being understaffed. While some reviewers enjoyed the food, mentioning delicious items like the shrimp scampi, NY strip, and homemade pasta, others experienced inconsistently cooked steaks and underwhelming desserts. Many praised the ambiance and decor, as well as the kindness of the management, particularly the owner and chef, who are noted for their dedication to customer satisfaction. However, issues such as distracting staff conversations and visible supply storage detracted from some diners' experiences. Overall, while some find it an exceptional spot worth revisiting, others feel it falls short compared to other local steakhouses. Reservations are recommended for the best experience.

Was trying to decide where to go for Valentine's dinner. Since this place is close to home and had an open reservation, we decided to give them a try. Arrived at 6:10 for our 6:30 reservation and was seated right away. Out the gate service seemed to be slow. It took about 8-10 minutes before our server came over to get our drink orders. As the evening continued the service seemed to get even slower. Although this was a holiday weekend, I don't think that was the reason for the slowness. It appeared that they were under staffed and only one person working the bar. They had a set menu for Valentine's Day which ended up being pretty good. I didn't really like that they didn't allow you a choice of regular menu or the set menu. Appetizers: Caesar Salad & Shrimp scampi. The shrimp scampi was seasoned to perfection. Main course: Steak mashed potatoes and asparagus. The potatoes were seasoned wonderfully. The steak was cool. Not nasty but the waiter made it a point to say the executive chef was from steak 48. Shouldn't have mentioned that because there was no comparison on food or service. Dessert: We went with the apple pie and ice cream pie f which the pie was more like apple bread pudding. Definitely not a pie. It was burnt so I sent it back and got the chocolate cake which was more like a moose cake. Nothing exciting. Overall, the food was decent but the service was not great. Sharon the manager came around and asked about the food. They really need to step up the service.

My husband works for us foods and delivers here so he decided to take me for Valentine’s Day! Fernando the chef is a master chef and genius with flavors. We had the ny strip with the mash, short rib with the pasta, tomato bisque soup, Caesar salad and for dessert, the chocolate mousse, layered cake and chocolate covered strawberries. I will just say it was the most amazing meal I have had in a very long time. The steak was juicy seasoned to perfection. The pasta was homemade and so fresh. The Caesar salad was spectacular. The tomato bisque soup was delicious with their fresh bread. Everything they served was just so fresh and delicious and you can tell Fernando cooks with love. The owner, Shannon and manager Kim were so amazing kind and welcoming. We truly enjoyed our experience and appreciate everyone who made date night very special. Definitely check them out and try out their delicious food.

Very cute, intimate steakhouse in the heart of Ballantyne. I went for Jazz Sunday and the music provided the perfect ambience. Service was awesome and food was delish although I will say portions pretty small for price. I only got a couple apps, the pork belly and the bang bang shrimp. Both were very flavorful. I would go back to try other items. Love the decor of the place. Classy and slightly vintage.

In town for a business trip. Ellie greeted me with a warm welcome and friendly smile shared her personal favorite menu selections and started my evening off with a generous red wine pour. The she crab soup lured me in and the flavors danced on my palate bringing me back to the very first time I tasted this amazing buttery bisque 15 years ago. The strip steak was cooked to perfection complimented by the smoked side Cesar salad. The atmosphere delivers a relaxing ambiance where you get lost in the strings and music of Sinatra and Julie Garland … it’s a must

We went to CNW steakhouse for my birthday dinner. The steaks were phenomenal. I had the New York strip, and my husband had The tomahawk ribeye. Both were cooked perfectly the vegetables, the complemented them or phenomenal. We also had a crispy pork belly as our appetizer. It was succulent the sauce on it was the perfect compliment. We did have a situation with my mistake the first time where it was overdone, I like my medium rare and it came well done, the staff immediately addressed it and brought back a perfect steak for me. For dessert we had a special birthday crème brûlée. The wine that we had to accompany our dinner was the Penner Ashe Pinot Noir, I highly recommend it.

My wife and I went during restaurant week on a Monday night, so take this with a grain of salt: Tables were set up too close and made it difficult to enjoy our dinner with guests and wait staff bumping into each other. It was apparent that the staff had issues with each other as we could hear and see attitudes. My filet mignon could barely even pass for being cooked even though I ordered it medium-well. (See picture) We both ordered our own creme brulee but both were not made properly. We assume they ran out earlier in the day and started making it which didn't allow the cream to solidify. (See picture) Our waitress was new. She was very sweet, but struggled to keep up with tables. Out of the 20 or so tables in the dining room, about half were full, so it wasn't a crazy busy night. I'm giving 3 stars though because the upsides were that even though things were not cooked properly, it was tasty. Mashed potatoes were one of the best I've had. Steak was buttery and seasoned well, but hard to mess up filet mignon. The veggies were spot on as well. Assuming the seating arrangement was to accommodate more guests for restaurant week, the atmosphere was not bad. Dim lighting and nice cutlery. Staff needs to learn to get along though. That goes for managers too because they seemed very unprofessional and unpleasant to work for.

I don’t know what half the people are smoking in other reviews. I view steakhouses in Charlotte as such: 1) Steak 48 or Dean’s (excellent) 2) Del Friscos, Capital Grille (great+) 3) Oak, STK, Fleming’s, Eddie V’s (great) 4) Beef and Bottle (good vibes, gotta go) This place was simply not good. All the other places are better. You can also get a way better meal at Hestia across the street. Service: our waiter was perfectly fine. The issue is you have staff members everywhere. Yes, everywhere. People carrying supplies throughout the dining room for the other side of the restaurant. This is a small place. Conversations between staff members echo. It’s distracting. We came in at 4PM the Saturday following Valentine’s Day. Staff talking at the bar (4+), disagreement with hostesses (plural) on where to sit my wife and I (there were 4 others in the restaurant at the time), people chilling at what looked to be an old deli bar, and an entire back area where you could see supplies and silverware being prepped. All this is noticeable when you arrive. Food: I had a NY strip (limited menu due to Valentine’s Day, which we thought ended on Valentine’s Day). It was cooked uneven. Half was fine. Half was well done. Even thickness on the cut. Either it’s stored or cooked wrong. No excuse. My experience matches other reviewed about steaks not cooked properly. It wasn’t “awful” but guys, this wasn’t good whatsoever. I’m not a jerk. I eat out all the time for work. If you advertise yourself as a steakhouse, you better have steak cooked professionally. The oysters were the best part of the meal. The “bread” is what I’d expect for a charcuterie board. Atmosphere: lol, I am also not trying to be rude, but what was clearly an old deli bar had fridges with food stored (salad, desserts, etc.) right in the open. I don’t know, maybe I’m a snob for not seeing the appeal of wanting to see this at a place charging ~$90 / person for Valentine’s Day. I also appreciated being seated with my wife’s back directly under the fire alarm. I also love women, but I thought the half naked ladies on the men’s bathroom wall to be something out of a dive bar. This wasn’t Marilyn Monroe. I just don’t get it. My wife and I just laughed about it. Please just add blinds so we don’t see 5+ people in the side room with supplies. It’s just weird. The entire experience was weird. My wife and I won’t go back. I wouldn’t take any of my clients there. I really can’t recommend going here whatsoever. If you’re tipsy across the street at the AC bar, just go to BlackFinn or Hestia. $225 tab for a mediocre meal. I didn’t even have the patience to explain this to the manager who stopped by asking how things were. It just wasn’t worth my time, and I don’t know how this is reviewed in the same zip code as Steak 48 on Google. This place will not be here in 12 months.

We stayed at the AC Hotel and took a chance on this new restaurant. To say that we were blown away is an understatement. When we visit the Charlotte area, we normally eat at other high end steakhouses. We won’t be doing that anymore. C&W has our hearts now! The food was amazing and the portions were large. We asked our wonderful waiter if we could speak to the Head Chef. The Head Chef was so kind and appreciative of our compliments. We told him that our food was the best we have had and will be telling everyone to visit the restaurant. The General Manager, Kim, stopped by and we beamed when telling her how awesome our experience had been. She is so proud of the restaurant and rightly so! If you are in the Ballentyne area, we strongly encourage you to visit this restaurant…but make reservations!!! Kudos to C&W Steakhouse! We can’t wait to come back.
