Customer Review Summary
Johnny's Cafe has a rich history, having been in operation for over 102 years, with a focus on classic steakhouse fare. The onion rings and french onion soup received positive mentions, indicating quality appetizers. Steak dishes have mixed reviews; while some are perfectly cooked and flavorful, others, like the ribeye and filet, were critiqued for being tough or lacking seasoning. Service has been consistently noted as excellent, with servers providing attentive and friendly experiences. The atmosphere is described as vintage and nostalgic, appealing to those seeking a traditional dining experience. However, some reviews express disappointment in food quality and preparation, suggesting the restaurant may have lost its edge. Overall, opinions are divided; while many appreciate the ambiance and service, others feel the food does not meet expectations for a steakhouse of its reputation. The cafe is recommended for its historic charm but may need to improve food quality to retain loyal customers.

Johnny's has been around for 102 years because they know what they are doing. The onion ring appetizer has good thick onion rings that seem hand battered. The Caesar salad has a full quartered egg and our server even brought me anchovies. The steaks are perfectly cooked and they brought out a Johnny's sauce that was pleasantly delicious. Our server was absolutely fantastic and the interior is clean and well-kept.

Are you looking for a genuine steak house? Then, head down to Johnny's. This steakhouse has been around since 1922, aging and cutting steaks in house. The atmosphere is vintage, the service attentive, the menu classic. There are a variety of steaks, fish, and chicken proteins. I wonder how many high power lunches have been held at Johnny's. Prices are very reasonable. Lunch services says it ends at 2 pm, as I was leaving at 2, guests were still being seated. My dad and I had the 12 oz strip steak. The flavor was great and it was very tender. Don't miss out on this classic Omaha steakhouse located in the old stockyard district.

Old school of old school's of steakhouses minus Peter Lugers and some rare others. Overall I wished this was better. Soup du Jour $2.95/Cup$3.95/Bowl French onion soup 8/10 - one of the better onion soups I have had. If they have it get it. Ribeye Steak $39.95 13 oz, broiled and the butcher’s favorite 6/10 - cooked to spec. Small thin grisly steak. Not overall impressed. Omaha Strip Steak $33.95 12 oz, broiled and the owner’s favorite 7/10 - cooked to spec. The cut of meat was better. cowboy mashed potatoes 7/10 - small portion but rich tasting Service was great and loved the old school atmosphere. Wish they did not reduce their value of the food. This is not the corner to cut nor skimp. Cost high value average. Please improve so I can come back.

Hidden gem with GREAT STEAKS!! This place was phenomenal. Love every aspect of our experience. Our waitress was on point!! She was friendly and knew her menu. She had wonderful recommendations. The cocktails were fabulous 🍸 I had the chicken fried steak and my husband had an amazing cut of meat that was on special. The atmosphere was so relaxing and inviting.

Feels like the owners have given up. This was a first visit for both my wife and I. We're both in our 40's and walking in made us very nostalgic of childhood "fancy" steakhouses. It was very clean and a wonderful, slightly dark moody atmosphere for a friday dinner date. We were very excited as we sat down to enjoy one of Omaha's oldest steakhouses. Unfortunately, our titillation was short lived. Other than our wonderful server, the experience was lackluster at best. The most edible element was the french onion soup. It was a bit sweet for my taste, but overall pretty good. My wife's salad was drowning in dressing that tasted..ok. Then the main courses arrived. Ribeye with "cowboy" mashed potatoes and petite filet with steamed veggies. Originally from Texas, steak is a staple at home and out. I do not think I have ever encountered a worse piece of meat anywhere. The "filet" was fatty and stringy, making it difficult to cut. The ribeye looked and chewed like leather. Neither had any hint of seasoning, and I could not muster enough strength to chew more than 2 bites. I even paid extra to get some of the "cowboy butter"(billed as butter with bacon, jalepeño, and blue cheese), but even that had only the slightest hint of bacon and no cheese or jalepeño. My potatoes had the texture/flavor of instant, the tiniest bit of the "cowboy" butter made no difference on the palate. My wife's steamed veggies seemed to have come directly from a microwave steamer bag, with just as much flavor. I think the worst/most interesting part was the response when I mentioned my steak was inedible. Our server offered to replace it, and encouraged the prime rib because it would be "faster." I lost all trust, so I opted not to accept a replacement and it was removed from our bill. The notable part was that the server did not seem surprised nor concerned by my displeasure. When no manager/owner came by to verify/apologize, I arrived at the conclusion stated first in this review. I can't imagine how any manager/owner with any level of passion could sit idly by and serve food at such a shockingly low standard. It is very sad to see a place with such great history, nostalgia, and potential to be wasted. On a side note, as we arrived there was someone feeding stray cats on the sidewalk leading to the building. We could smell the wet cat food walking into the restaurant. Probably should have given us pause, or perhaps a bit of warning. 🤷

Our waitress was a gem and had great suggestions! The chicken and dumpling soup was the perfect balance of chicken, veggies and dumplings. Everything was delicious and had plenty of the portions. Desserts are homemade and the Oreo cheesecake was soooo delicious!

It is such a wonderful pleasure to come here for dinner when I come visit my hometown of Omaha. I come here not only for sentimental reasons but for their aged steaks that are THE BEST I've had anywhere . Everything about our dinner tonight was exceptional. Congratulations to the Kawa family for 100 years and wishing them all the best in the years to come. They have stood the test of time and it's so nice to see Johnny's Cafe is still going strong. My husband had the Porterhouse and I had the amazing New York Strip. Both were cooked perfectly to order. Their crisp onion rings have a lovely , light coating that melts in your mouth. The Cowboy Mashed potatoes were so flavorful, I found myself scraping the dish remnants out with a piece of steak! The Salted Chocolate Caramel Decadence dessert lived up to it's name. Just the right size, with an "oh so delicious" rich cocoa taste that's not super sweet like the best fudge you've ever had. Our server, Elizabeth, was attentive, friendly and had a wonderful attitude. We hope to see her again here on our next visit to Johnny's .

This place is really cool. It's been around for almost a century. We went for the prime rib special for 2. It was generally good, though next time I would try something else. It was a bit thin. My favorite part of the meal was the cheesy stuffed potato. I wasn't a fan of the dessert. The meal itself was 3 stars. I really want to love this place because the people behind it seem amazing. The people are 5 stars and the setting/atmosphere is very interesting. Worth checking out since it's such a unique place. Parking is available in a large lot, the only thing is getting to it is interesting since it's off of the highway and you have to come onto it in a very specific way. We just followed the GPS and we did arrive there without an issue.
