About URBANA Mexican Gastronomy & Mixology - steak house in San Diego, California
Customer Review Summary
Overall, URBANA Mexican Gastronomy & Mixology offers a mix of good food and drinks with a few inconsistencies. The cocktails and margaritas received positive remarks, while some food items, like the fish tacos, were reported as chewy. Service varies; some reviews noted it as friendly and attentive, while others experienced delays. The setting is in an affluent area, though some diners felt seating arrangements were odd and wait times excessive. Food presentation is praised, but authenticity was questioned, with some dishes being upscale takes on traditional items. Highlights include the pork belly and al pastor tacos, but some options like the chicken mole tacos were considered dry. Prices are seen as high for the value, reflecting the location rather than the quality of food. Despite mixed experiences, many diners expressed a willingness to return and try different items.

All cocktails were good, food had great presentation but some items missed the mark like Socal famous fish tacos were chewy. Service was good but slow.

Had a wonderful dinner at Urbana. Very friendly service. Margaritas were well made. Micheladas were superb. Veggie tacos were well presented and their spicy salsa really has a kick to it!

It was a nice restaurant in an affluent area. We got there after lunch and before dinner rush and we were told we have to wait to be seated-no problem, but the entire dining room was empty and there were only people at 2 small tables on the balcony- we ended sitting in the same area. Good thing there was a break in the rain. It took almost 30min to get our food and drinks ordered, then we lost track of time once our apps and drinks were served. I'll say they had their own flair to their food and presentations, but not much authentic tradition in the foods. It was potions were decent but prices too high matched the area nd ambience, but not the food itself.

Service was on point. Ordered a few different items and they were good overall. The filet tacos were definitely the best and the pork belly was decent. The chicken was dry for the mole tacos. Nachos and elote hit the spot.

Loved the atmosphere. The food was good. I got the arrachera taco, pork belly taco, elote and I was craving a michelada (margarita and beer)… when I saw that they had a Michelada I immediately order that. What I wasn’t told by the under 21-year-old server, is that it’s not your typical Michelada. I do not blame her, but I would think in the future it would be great to make sure your customers know there’s a difference. This one is served with side of seasonings. I believe there is Worchester sauce, something spicy in it. So you’re supposed to add this into your beer. I was not a fan I took a few sips, but I left it. I really enjoyed the pork belly taco and the Elote the steak taco was OK. I do believe that the prices are a little higher than they should be for what you get. I’m sure because of the location and area that it’s located in that is part of the reason the prices are that way. I really wanted to try it, so I’m glad I did. I may be back in the future and maybe will try different tacos but I will know not to get any alcoholic beverage unless it’s a regular margarita

Good restaurant. They do an upscale take on street tacos. My favorite was the al pastor-- highly recommend that one. The tortillas are handmade and very delicious. We had some agua frescas, which were refreshing (I had the tamarindo tamayo). Good dessert as well-- bread pudding with ice cream. Check it out.

Almost everything we tried was great (nachos al pastor, Brussel sprouts with chorizo, tacos with shrimp, lobster, birria, fillet) and the elite. Only the Torados where not great. Great service. The interior has some nice accents, but needs a little sprucing up as it is starting to look a little aged (somw plates are chipped, some areas of the wall need touch-up paint, etc.)

Love this place, and it's become my go-to for Mexican food - I think everyone gets things that appeal to them most often. For me, it's pork belly taco, the chicken mole taco, and sometimes the shrimp taco. All are great. I think I've tried a vegan taco they have also which is also great. Not sure why some people have left a bad review, I've always had great service and the food is always great. They even have pozole, which is somewhat rare, but it's a real treat (with shredded pork or chicken). My daughter likes the birria beef tacos. They even accommodate my dairy allergy by omitting any cheese or cream-based sauces, for which I'm appreciative. Let's just say I would be sad if any bad reviews forced this place to close, as I feel there aren't really a whole lot of great Mexican places in San Diego that are California-healthy. Most cater to mid-western tastes, which usually means heavily sauced and extremely heavy, prepping you for Type-2 diabetes. Urbana is not that type of place.
