Customer Review Summary
Okawa Japanese Restaurant offers a mixed experience based on customer reviews. Some guests praise the food, highlighting unique dishes like the yellow tuna collar and delicious sauces. They appreciate the friendly service, especially from sushi Chef Teddy, and the welcoming atmosphere. However, several reviews point out inconsistencies in food quality and service, with reports of dry tonkatsu, overcooked calamari, and burnt teriyaki chicken. Customers also noted that the restaurant can be understaffed, leading to delays in service, especially during off-peak times. While many patrons have had pleasant experiences, praising the ambiance and certain dishes, others experienced significant dissatisfaction, suggesting variability in service and quality on different nights. Overall, the restaurant seems to shine on busy nights but may disappoint on quieter evenings.

I'm visiting a friend &he introduced me to this wonderful Japanese food experience. Our main dish was a new one for both of us yellow tuna collar. Everything was delicious & I loved the new food choices suggested to me from Bobby.

I was in the neighborhood and was craving Japanese food. I found this place and came by for dinner on a Friday evening. I sat at the bar and oddly I saw that a space was reserved for a couple that was already eating at the bar. I have never seen reservations for a bar spot. As I was sitting there, I noticed that the customers were very friendly with the sushi Chef and vice versa. I could tell right away that this was going to be a good restaurant based on their interaction - loyal customers are always an indication of good food and great service. I was hungry (and I also eat a lot) so, I ordered three items. The sushi chef asked me if I was sure I could eat everything and I said yes. And I definitely did. As I was sitting there eating my food. I was listening to the conversation, both English and the other language that the sushi Chef was speaking in. I was trying to figure out if they were Korean or Chinese. I come to find out that the sushi Chef, Teddy, used to live in Burma. (But I think he’s Chinese? I forgot to ask. And I couldn’t tell if they were speaking in Mandarin). Teddy and I had a little chat about Burma. I told him how I had visited a few years ago to Yangon and Bagan and how different it was compared to other countries I’ve been to. Although I was meeting Teddy for the first time, I felt like I had known him for awhile. Okay, to the food! It was good! The sauce for the Hamachi kama is fire! I look forward to going back when I’m in the area again. Overall service was great from the hostess, to the girls taking my order and taking away my plates to Tina and Teddy and even the friendly bar customers (I think Friday nights is sushi night for them and it was recently his wife’s birthday (he bought her a car with cash…that got me thinking, the Rover I parked next to must have been their car…. What can I say, you hear a lot when you’re not on your phone and eating alone. Haha). Thanks for the great service and good food! And most importantly thanks for making me and all your customers feel welcome and important! UPDATE: Went back on a Tuesday. It was understaffed, and I thought the roll wasn’t as good as the first time. Also, I made a mistake of ordering the tonkatsu. It was very dry, too thin and hard to digest. It also took the waitress over 10 minutes to give me my bill. I understand they are understaffed, but there were like only four other tables with 2 people at each table. Definitely go on a Friday when they are expecting a lot of customers so they are fully staffed. The food did come out quickly though. But now I understand some of the reviews saying that no one helped them or that they were waiting for a while to get a table, etc. The guy making the sushi did acknowledge me when I went up to the sushi bar. I was just disappointed since it wasn’t as good compared to my first experience.

The worse experience ever ! The food was horrible ! I would have been better off going to Safeway and picking up a sushi container. I ordered the Tempura Udon which i thought was a safe dish to order .. i was completely wrong .. the soup was not hot , it had a weird taste and the tempura tasted like it was fried in old oil. I also ordered the Futomake roll and to my surprise I couldn’t tell what it was . The waiter told me if i didn’t like it to not order it again . Lastly i didn’t realize the waitress added a 20 percent tip in the bill without asking . Safe your time and money !

Been eating here for probably about 25 years. I've eaten at hundreds of sushi places and this is still my favorite. I moved from the area, but I still go here every year on my birthday.

Had to get cashiers attention just to be seated. She sat us at a dirty table with the previous customers cup was already there and filled the cup with water as if I was supposed to drink it. Soy sauce made sushi too salty but very good without. My appetizer came in the middle of my meal instead of before. Plum wine was good. I paid and cashier demanded a tip. Must be locally owned. Service wasn’t good enough for a tip. Would order pick up only.

Not the place for me. After so many 5-star reviews we gave it a shot. We had awful service overall, which was disappointing as many around us seemed to know the owners and had lovely service and a great time. It was odd that the server doesn’t take your order, but rather you have to wait for the older lady who writes and speak Japanese (? I’m guessing) so that she can write the ticket up. Our calamari was overdone and tasted like straight rubber. It was far from good. The miso soup was surprisingly great. Best part of the meal. I ordered teriyaki chicken and mixed tempura, and was wildly let down. The chicken was burnt to a crisp on one side, and they put that side face down so that it was hidden. All I could taste was charred meat. The tempura wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the taste of burnt chicken in my mouth. The sushi roll that we ordered was the Dragon roll. It really didn’t taste particularly fresh, and for $15 wasn’t even finished. Overall, would not recommend. Maybe we came on an off night, but it was enough for us to never return. Food 2/5 Service 1/5 Value 3/5 Ambiance 4/5 Overall experience 2/5

This place is amazing. Unfortunately, I no longer live in the area, so I don’t get to go often. However, when I am back to visit family, I am sure to stop here. The staff is very polite and is willing to answer questions and make recommendations. I have liked everything that I have ordered here, but the Julie Roll is out if this world! This place does not disappoint.
