About Oak House - steak house in Birmingham, Alabama

Customer Review Summary

The Oak House is praised for its cozy atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, and culinary artistry. Many reviews commend the quality of food, particularly the pork belly and various steaks, with some diners describing it as a top-tier culinary experience. However, there are significant complaints about service and food preparation; several diners experienced issues with steak cooking temperatures and slow service. One reviewer mentioned a disappointing birthday celebration experience with no dessert offered, which felt lacking given the expensive bill. Overall, while the food quality receives high marks, inconsistencies in service and execution may deter some guests from returning.

First time eating here with friends to celebrate two birthdays and really liked the atmosphere. The waitress was knowledgeable about the menu, and raved about the homemade fries. I ordered the ribeye, and was shocked of the up-charge to swap out the potatoes for fries but ordered both anyways. My steak came out perfect, but the other two ordered medium which came out rare, but they decided to eat some of it and not send it back. The other ordered a filet and was brought a ribeye so it was sent back. When the filet was brought it was rare instead of medium plus. The steak was sent back, and came back the same exact way and didn’t look any different. The owner came out, and apologized saying his main cook was out and didn’t have these issues. When the steak came back the second time it was still rare. No clue how this could happen and not be fixed but he didn’t eat. The table beside us also sent back a steak for undercooked issues. The waitress stated this was the second night of having grill issues so hopefully this gets resolved before they lose a good number of customers.

My uncle took me here as a surprise after a tough week and it was a welcome treat! He told me it is his favorite restaurant and he loves the chicken piccata. One of the managers opened the door for us as we arrived and then we sat at the bar. We ordered two “Sarah Smiles” cocktails which were a little too bitter for my taste, but I had to have the cocktail with my name in it. I ordered the pork belly appetizer, which was delicious! It was smaller than expected for the price of the item, but tasty nonetheless. I also got a side of the truffle fries which was again, delicious. My uncle got the chicken picatta which he let me taste, and he wasn’t wrong for picking it as his favorite. One of the servers, Haley, complimented my top and was very sweet. I’m pretty sure the brunette male bartender didn’t smile once while we were there, and he made dinner feel slightly unpleasant. Overall, I would come back to Oak House.

I made reservations at Oak House for my husband's birthday dinner with family. We had a party of 5, and were seated right away. This restaurant is pricey, but my husband and I had been there previously for an anniversary, so we knew the food was good. As expected, the food was delicious! We ordered a couple of appetizers, a few drinks, and we each had an entree - the 3 ladies had fish, and the 2 men had steak. No complaints on the food quality. Here's where I felt things were less than standard: we were asked by our waitress upon arriving if we were celebrating a special occasion, and I told her it was my husband's birthday. When the bill came for 5 people it was $380 - not including a tip. At the same time she brought out the bill, she brought out a candle stuck to a plate. I was absolutely shocked! No token birthday dessert for my husband. It felt very chintzy. Every restaurant I have ever gone to in order to celebrate a birthday would come up with something - even if it's only ice cream. TBH I found it rather embarrassing. Not sure if I will ever go back after this experience.

While The Oak House Restaurant is undoubtedly a culinary gem, the notion that five-star restaurants aspire to be like it is an unattainable ideal. The Oak House has set a lofty standard, one that is impossible to replicate. Its unique blend of culinary artistry, exceptional service, and enchanting ambiance has created a truly unparalleled experience. Oak House has now raised the bar of a Five-star rating to a new height. Attempting to emulate this perfection would be akin to chasing a culinary unicorn. Five-star restaurants may strive for excellence, but The Oak House has transcended the boundaries of fine dining, making it an unachievable benchmark. The culinary options can only be described as 'art', edible art. The ideas behind the creations are only attainable by the most imaginative minds with the idea that mere perfection is simply not enough. I rode my motorcycle 500 miles to try Oak House. It was worth every mile!

It was a wonderful dining experience! Tristan was our server. He has a great personality and is very menu knowledgeable. The pork belly appetizer and sea bass are next level! Looking forward to returning to this hidden jewel!

Another amazing diner with family at the Oak House. As always, the food is superb and beautifully plated. I had the chance to talk with Sarah, who makes everyone feel welcome and is so pleasant to speak with. I will say it again, if you are anywhere near the Oak House and a connoisseur of great food, you must not pass up the chance to treat yourself to a superb dining experience.

Our first dinner experience tonight left a lot to be desired. The food was sub-par when compared with other restaurants that Oak House compares itself to. The focaccia and fried green tomatoes were great, thinly sliced and well seasoned. My redfish was overcooked, and unfortunately the ribeye was mostly gristle he left almost half of his steak uneaten. Very disappointed in the service, we told our server that it was a special celebration for our guests, my daughter , it was their wedding anniversary, she never mentioned that once during our two hour meal. Again, this place came highly recommended by our friends but did not meet our expectations relative to the prices charged. Choose your entrees carefully.. the appetizers were good.
