About Eckl's - steak house in Buffalo, New York
Customer Review Summary
Eckl's has received mixed reviews from diners. Some customers praised the knowledgeable staff and flavorful drinks, particularly the pineapple hibiscus hard cider. The risotto and prime rib were highlighted as exceptional dishes, with one diner celebrating a birthday dinner that included well-prepared crab cakes and a perfect filet. However, many reviews criticized the service, describing it as slow and lacking in personality. Instances of long waits for drink orders and entrees were noted, detracting from the overall dining experience. Recent visits indicated a decline in food quality; some dishes were bland or improperly cooked, raising concerns about quality control. Despite some enjoyable desserts, several patrons expressed disappointment, wishing for a return to the pre-COVID standards of the restaurant. Overall, while the atmosphere and certain menu items were appreciated, inconsistent service and food quality led to hesitance in recommending a return visit.

Overall, I had a poor experience here. The fine dining experience was not present, and instead, we paid for expensive food that didn't taste good nor well presented. Options are limited, and the atmosphere is very mediocre.

Spot on. Knowledgeable staff and delicious full, well developed flavors. The bar has an above average selection. Try the, "pineapple hibiscus hard cider," by Clarksburg. It was really a solid, well concocted drink. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't try the risotto. Holy cow, spot on. Like top tier good, wow!

Wanted prime rib for birthday dinner and what once was a staple has become almost impossible to find outside of steak chain restaurants! Found it at Eckl's ( only on Saturday). Crab cakes, french onion soup for apps were delicious!! My "rare" prime rib was exactly what I wanted and tasted great! My girl's filet was also perfection. Food wise it was a great dinner! Service.... Ugh. Seated at only the 2nd table of guests in the whole dining room. Took a fairly long time for server to even acknowledge us as she set up the other tables. Finally arrived, zero personality, no smile, wanted to take complete order right now, but we ordered cocktails and apps only.... 1 martini, 1 vodka drink, no customers at bar, 1 other table of 4.... Waited..... Waited...... Waited. After 10 minutes, Miss Pleasant shows up for our entree orders?! I didnt even get my cocktail yet!! Oh, ok. Brings drinks, apps soon after and as taking my last bite of app, here come entrees. As I said all food was exceptional. Server wandered by a few times to check but didnt look real happy to do it!! Maybe a different job choice in her future. Unfortunately not worth hurrying back, but again kudos to chef!

<<<<LATEST UPDATE>>>> Gave Eckl's another try on last day of June2023, and this will be my last for a long while until something changes. Appetizers had an off flavor and were bland. The shrimp cocktail was good, but how do you put 2 jumbo size shrimp on the glass and then 4 medium-sized shrimp. I felt so slighted seeing the smaller ones. Dinner wasn't much better. The lamb was served raw, and the filet mignon was supposed to be medium rare and was served medium well. The executive chef was nice enough to come out and apologize and advised that the chef was new, but where is the quality control. I can somewhat understand if the place was busy, but we were only ones in the front dining area(that in itself should have told us something that something is horribly gone wrong with place). The garnishing of the plates was the best part of the meals, as you can see in the updated pictures. They look good, but once you dig in is when the disappointment occurs. Seasonings are off on everything, again, no quality control check occurs prior to serving are my thoughts. Desserts were complimentary at least because of the dinner debacle, and I have to say, was the silver lining to eating here and was very yummy, but we did not come here for the desserts. I miss preCovid Eckl's and wish you would come back. Maybe in a year or so, I will try again but what I paid for this horrible dinner I will definitely think twice if I want to potentially drop up to $200 for my wife and I to eat here not knowing what we are going to get. Another 2 star drop for me. *****UPDATE**** Came here for lunch service in May2023 and was not a great experience. The bartender was the waiter, and the service was slow. Food quality and choices are not nearly nothing like dinner service. Overpriced for what you received or should say not received. Hopefully, dinner service hasn't gone bad as well, and I will visit again and review again for that. 2 star drop for me. ××××ORIGINAL REVIEW×××× THIS PLACE IS GREAT. FOOD AND DRINKS A LITTLE PRICEY BUT WAS WELL WORTH IT BECAUSE EVERYTHING TASTED GREAT.

Great place, awesome food. Great quick cheap lunch also! This most recent visit i had the beef on weck, beef was perfect so was the roll. One wouldnt think the roll is important but it is and theirs is great. The potato wedges w dips hit the spot . The wife had the turkey sandwich, very tasty and the pickled onions on it were a pleasant surprise. Great lunch portions, wont have ya leaving overstuffed but def not hungry.

I generally concur with the other reviews on Yelp at least--the restaurant's ambience is very nice, and I found the service to be pleasant and attentive, but the food is somewhat pricey. The Beef on Weck rolls are 14 dollars, for approximately the same quality and slightly smaller size as, say, Irish Spring Rolls at the Irishman pub for 11 dollars. Still, I guess if you really love a combination of ambience and location in Buffalo's urban core it's good enough.

Renovated historical restaurant, with restoration of original woodwork is a fabulous place to take out of town guests to show off Buffalo. Food is of great quality and served tastefully, specializing in aged beef and seafood. The bar is in the middle of one of the several open rooms with original woodwork and exquisite detail.
