About Alexus Steakhouse & Tavern - steak house in Paterson, New Jersey

Casual American steakhouse offering hand-cut steaks, local & imported brews & sports on TV.

Customer Review Summary

Alexus Steakhouse & Tavern has received mixed reviews. Many reviewers found the prices excessively high for the quality of food, with specific complaints about the nachos, cheeseburgers, and Philly cheesesteaks being particularly disappointing. Service experiences varied; while some servers were described as friendly and attentive, one reviewer noted rudeness from a specific older waitress, contrasting it with a positive experience with another server. The ambiance has shifted over time, from traditional to a more casual sports bar vibe, appealing to families and sports fans with TVs and drink deals. Food quality is inconsistent; while some items (like the Delmonico steak) received high praise, others like the French onion soup were rated poorly. Overall, the restaurant is viewed as decent for a casual meal, but expectations should be tempered, as it may not fulfill all the characteristics of a traditional steakhouse.

Insanely overpriced. I've passed this place a million times and finally tried it with my family. We scanned the menu and noticed very curious pricing that signaled either particularly large portions or particularly high quality ingredients. The menu items that stuck out as particularly pricey were $21 for nachos appetizer, $24 for a steak quesadilla appetizer, $29 for a steak Caesar salad, $22 for a Cobb Salad, $16 for a kids menu cheeseburger and fries, $5 soda, and $5 tea (see the pic of the menu) . Most of the other menu items were also on the higher end of the price range but I have seen similar prices for those items at other restaurants so I thought maybe those items were large and/or very good. We ended up ordering nachos, kids cheeseburger, regular sized bacon burger, a Philly cheesesteak, and two sodas. For $21 the nachos were bad (see pic). There was hardly any cheese on it, the chips were soggy and some were burnt badly. I order nachos often wherever I go and I'd say their nachos should have been priced around $10-$12, but even at that price point the lack of cheese would've been a problem. The kids burger was basically two slider sized burger patties in a bun with fries, a drink and a scoop of ice cream. $16 was high but not crazy high and I'd say it was worth more like $12-$14. The adult bacon burger was greasy with a small slice of bacon in it and, once again, was not worth $19. It was worth closer to $15. The Philly cheese steak was small and also greasy (see pic). For $22 I expected a lot better and this should have been more like $15-$16. All said and done our bill came to $92 and after tip it was a little over $110. That's an unreasonable amount of money for the food we received. Lastly, we were seated in one of their booths and when I sat down I sank about 4 inches down. I had to slide over to the end of my booth bench seat near the wall. There was some kind of hole or major dent in the seat cushion but there was no obvious damage to the upholstery. I think it goes without saying that no matter what caliber of restaurant you dine at they should all provide tables and seats that don't have major damage. I decided to live with it since the end of the bench seat was OK. However at the end of the meal after I signed the bill and we were ready to leave I mentioned the issue with the seat to the waitress in a friendly tone of "just to let you know" and not a complaint. She responded that they knew about it and that's it. If you know the seat is damaged why don't you fix it? (or at least don't seat people there unless you have no choice, when we ate there the place was 90% empty and there were tons of other open tables available). I like to support local businesses but I can't see returning to this place nor could I recommend others try it. I know the costs of doing business have gone up for restaurants and lots of other businesses. I expect and have seen price increases at almost all businesses I use. However there's a limit to how much of those costs you can transfer to your customers, depending on what you're selling. There is only so much customers will be willing to pay for things like burgers and nachos of this caliber. Unlike costs the restaurant staff has total control over things like caring about customers enough to fix a busted seat before seating them on it. There's no excuse for that.

I have no idea why it was so easy to get a table - their Delmonico steak is still to die for. The red chequered table cloths are now a trendier black and white, bit the vibe and food is just as good as the last time I visited (>5 years ago). They were busier earlier in the day - so reservations not a bad idea

We came here for a meal with friends, while back for a visit. It was a quiet evening when we went. We had calamari, which was delicious. Hubby had the Seafood Medley and loved it! I had the Pub Steak, a little dry and charred. No butter for a baked potato, none to be found on the evening we were there. Our server was great and very apologetic. I would definitely give a redo.

We love this place, we always come here at least once a month and it is kinda our family spot. Most of the time good food, big portions and good prices for the amount of food you are getting, also good variety and they have specials on lunch and dinner. They have sometimes days when food is not so great or too salty tho. Service is always great. Our favorite is buffalo chicken tenders and I personally love seafood trio because of scallops. Good place for family dinners and also for sports fan, because they have a lot of TVs and deals on drinks.

My first time coming here after driving past it for years. Our entrees were delicious. Unfortunately, the kitchen closed and we were unable to get desserts but our server brought us complimentary dessert shots. That was nice. Will definitely return.

This place overall is decent, but it's more tavern / sports bar than an actual steakhouse --- so just taper your expectations --- it doesnt come with all of the bells and whistles of an actual steakhouse. This place is pretty casual and they keep it pretty simple ---- eat, drink, laugh and go home. Great place to get together with friends and family either large or small. The food is good and the prices $$$ are reasonable so give this a try ---

I have only come here occasionally over the years, so I pretty well know what to expect when I come here. I steer clear of everything but the beer, and I know enough to, when I order food, just to have it to go, because I know, invariably, that my meat will be vastly undercooked ( any trace of pink in cooked meat is unhealthy), so I just take it home and recook it to my specifications. One thing I love about this place is that while I'm here, I have numerous options for watching sports events on the prolific television sets in the bar room.
