About Umbria - steak house in Boston, Massachusetts
Customer Review Summary
Umbria offers a mixed dining experience based on customer reviews. The service has generally received high marks, with some servers being described as attentive and knowledgeable. Guests enjoyed dishes like crab cakes, Frutti Di Mare, and Pumpkin Tortellini, praising their freshness and flavor. However, several diners reported issues, notably with the wagyu steak being old and the stuffed lobster being overly stuffed with not much meat. The ambiance can be loud, particularly on the first floor, prompting some to recommend the quieter second floor. Some diners had excellent experiences with the bar staff and enjoyed drinks like espresso martinis. A few customers experienced significant delays with their meals and issues with pricing transparency. Overall, while there are standout dishes and great service, inconsistencies in food quality and atmosphere have led to a divided opinion on the restaurant.

Went for Sunday dinner at Umbria. Service was 5-star rating. The place is nice, a bit loud (nothing to worry about). We ordered 4 dishes and one of them was an utter disaster. We ordered the crab cakes and the salmon sushi to start (both were delicious), then the Colorado lamb rack and the Japanese wagyu. The lamb rack was exquisite, but the wagyu was OLD. To be more specific: it tasted like the meat had been covered by an old piece of rag for a very long time. Ruined the entire mood. Anyhow, if you decide to go to Umbria DO NOT get the wagyu.

Umbria on Hanover Street in Boston's North End delivered an memorable dining experience from start to finish. Our server, Anthony, was attentive, personable, and highly experienced, making our evening all the more enjoyable. His thoughtful wine and dinner recommendations were spot on, including suggesting a less expensive wine alternative that we ended up loving so much, we ordered a second bottle. The food was just as impressive—our Frutti Di Mare was bursting with fresh seafood and paired perfectly with their homemade pasta in a moderately spicy red sauce (be sure to ask for this version). We also couldn’t get enough of the Pumpkin Tortellini, which featured a delightful butternut squash filling and was elevated with bacon and sage butter. We finished our meal by sharing the Lemon Tart ; lemon curd with strawberries made with graham cracker crust and topped with meringue! Giovanni, the manager, added a personal touch by stopping by to introduce himself, making us feel truly welcomed. The combination of outstanding service, incredible food, and a warm atmosphere made for a fantastic evening. We can’t wait to return and experience more of what Umbria has to offer.

Great experience! Bar was awesome, had some wine before dinner. Terrific nice, service was spot on. Food was delicious. Had crab cakes for an appetizer, then had the beef rib with polenta. Very very good. My friend had the bison, cooked perfect and delicious. This place was quiet, fun and delicious. A must go! I went back. Here is the review Really good. Great wine choices, wait staff excellent, valet parking, great vibe. All three of us ordered the two pound stuffed lobster. It was pretty good, but not something I’d go back for. A ton of money, too much stuffing, couldn’t find the small tail. No knuckles. Not much lobster mostly stuffing. My king crab appetizer was excellent but one leg for $109 was too much. The fried calamari was excellent. Fun and good, worth trying!

I was skeptical about going to this restaurant based on the reviews, but I’m glad I ignored them. We were running late due to traffic and called to let them know. Even though the restaurant was packed and we were 30 minutes late, they sat us with no issue. Drinks were good, I enjoyed my passion martini and my husbands espresso martini was good too. We put in our app and entree order and the app came out within 10 minutes. We had the lobster tacos and they were so flavorful, we’re still thinking of them the next day! Definetly a 10/10. Out entrees came out shortly after so yes a bit fast for a busy restaurant, however, it wasn’t a big deal to us that it came out fast. I had the Chittarine and my husband had the Frutti Di Mare. Normal size portions, very flavorful. We did have to ask for bread, but our waitress was kind enough to give us the desert for free (without us asking for it to be taken off the check) since it took a while to come out. We really appreciated that. 1st floor is extremely loud near the bar, so definitely recommend the 2nd floor. The drink, food, ambiance is nothing like these bad reviews. We will absolutely be back!

Sat at the bar here and made friends with Rene the bartender she is excellent and so sweet. The other bartender Jordan was also excellent and very accommodating. The espresso martini was fabulous and we had so much fun talking with the rest of the bar we ordered a cowboy ribeye for two which was delicious with a side of truffle fries.

My wife and I visited this steakhouse for the first time the other night, and our experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we pulled up and utilized the valet service, we knew we were in for a treat. The transformation they have achieved with the space is truly remarkable, bringing a refreshing modern touch to the North End area. The highlight of our evening was undoubtedly the food. The quality and flavor of the dishes were absolutely fantastic, leaving us thoroughly impressed. Each bite was a delightful explosion of culinary expertise. The attention to detail in the preparation and presentation was evident, and it truly elevated the dining experience. In addition to the stellar food, our server was exceptional. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and provided impeccable service throughout the night. Their ability to anticipate our needs and offer helpful recommendations added an extra layer of enjoyment to our evening. Overall, our visit to this steakhouse was a memorable one. The combination of outstanding food, attentive service, and the modern ambiance made for an unforgettable dining experience. We highly recommend it to anyone looking for a top-notch steakhouse in the North End area.

This was probably one of the most bizarre dining experiences of my life. Where to begin… 1. We waited 45 minutes for bread. 2. We waited over 60 minutes for dinner. 3. The restaurant was not busy and there were plenty of servers standing around doing nothing. 4. Sodas do not have free refills and the menu doesn’t state that. $3 per Diet Coke! 5. I asked the waitress how much the lobster was. She said $38. The bill comes and it says $130!!! When I asked her why it was $130, she said I asked how much the salmon was. 6. The atmosphere has a weird club vibe with a bouncer which does not fit the restaurant/neighborhood/etc. I saw a coworker from afar and touched base with him the next day. He had the same experience. Seriously. Just don’t.

We love steak houses and have been to them all...and expect a steak house to cook steak perfectly for this price. Both filets were asked for medium, came out medium well and we'll done. They quickly corrected the issue with new steaks that were cooked correctly. They also issued new hot sides as a courtesy which was nice. Steaks had no rub on them and were plain...which was Ok. Steaks came with bone marrow that smelled like a stinky bellybutton...I'd recommend leaving that off. We didn't experience any service issues like the other reviews. We had a team waiting on us and felt very attended to. Service was 5 star for sure. The other two dishes our party got were amazing and desserts were too. We would go back...it was a nice experience. We would just stay away from the steaks for the price.
