About PERILLA steakhouse - steak house in Chicago, Illinois

Customer Review Summary

Perilla Steakhouse offers a mix of experiences, with both positive and negative reviews. Many guests enjoyed the tasting menu, highlighting the excellent cocktails and service. The ambiance is frequently praised for its beauty and intimate atmosphere. Dishes like the Rice Cake Cacio e Pepe and crab scallion pancake received commendation, while the sides, particularly monkey bread, were standout favorites. However, there were reports of disappointment regarding portion sizes, with some mains feeling more like sides and certain dishes being described as mediocre or overly salty. Service can be hit or miss, as some patrons experienced rushed meals, particularly on busy nights like New Year’s Eve. Overall, while the restaurant has much to offer, including a stylish dining space and solid cocktails, consistency in food quality and service appears to be an area for improvement.

A friend and I went before a show at the Chicago theater on Valentine’s Day. We don’t normally do a tasting menu but decided to take a risk and it did not disappoint. My old fashioned was incredible, each course was fabulous, timed perfectly and gave us a great overview of the food for a reasonable price. The service was top notch and both of us walked away having eaten at lots of nice places traveling for work raving. Definitely will be back to try the regular menu soon.

Overall, Perilla is an enjoyable experience with a nice variety of dishes. The main dish was a little disappointing but otherwise, we were happy with our meal and experience. We went to celebrate NYE and were treated to a complimentary splash, one alcoholic based and another NA. Both offerings were wonderful. We also got one cocktail and one NA cocktail. I quite enjoyed the sticky rice martini and found it to be rather smooth. My partner tried the NA forest drink, which I personally loved but isn't going to be for everyone. It was smokey and sweet, think BBQ sauce. Instead of trying the set meal, which they did have a vegetarian off menu version of, we decided to order a la carte. We mainly ordered sides, the cabbage man, and one of the stews. All of the sides were absolutely delicious, but the standouts were the monkey bread and mushrooms. The stew was quite hardy and delicious as well, but it seems that the broth was not vegetarian-based, something that the server did let us know. This is an overall theme to watch out for if you're a pretty strict vegetarian, so please make sure you ask the server about any meat or fish concerns ahead of time when looking at the menu. While the cabbage main was cooked beautifully and was delicious, it seemed like that dish was more of a side rather than a main course. We were quite disappointed with the portion and overall presentation. We also tried the sundae for dessert which was a bit hit or miss. The chocolate ice cream seemed out of place, but the mugwort and other flavor were quite lovely. The mugwort ice cream isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea though, so take that into consideration if you're not at adventurous eater. Our only major complaint about the service is that while our initial dish, the monkey bread, came out first and we had plenty of time to eat it, all of the other food seemed rushed and was given to us all at once. We felt like we had to eat quickly so it didn't get cold and the courses could have been staggered a bit more. We do understand that we came on New Year's Eve so they had limited space and were probably trying to get folks in and out of the seats. This is definitely something that can be worked on though in the future. As for the space itself, it is beautiful and if you're lucky enough to get a spot that overlooks Wacker, the view is wonderful.

Excellent Korean Steakhouse and so much more. Rice Cake Cacio e Pepe is delightful as is the Scallion Pancake. Beautiful intimate tables.

A wonderful steakhouse with beautiful ambiance. Service and atmosphere were top notch! Staff was so helpful and fun and made the dining experience! Cocktails were great! The food was good, I wasn’t blown away by any one piece but found it to be a very solid meal! I would definitely recommend and I would love to come back and try some more of their sets!

Overall Disappointing - Mediocre Food and Service Ambiance was nice and host staff was friendly but that's where the good marks end. Food and waitstaff were disappointingly mediocre as I expected more from a Lotte affiliated restaurant off Michigan Ave. Rice was so hard we didn't touch it. Fries came out cold and soggy. Banchan was bland and boring and I've had better from the grocery store. After our food came out, our waitstaff didn't check in once until we were done and ready for the bill. I really wanted to enjoy another round of drinks but just gave up and wanted to leave. Overall a disappointing experience and next time we'll just eat at H Mart, as sad as that sounds.

Korean fusion steakhouse/K-BBQ place. - the Pork dumplings/mandu were served in a consommé flavoured with cheddar which was an interesting touch and provided a lot of savory notes initially but on subsequent sips tasted slightly too salty. - the crab cake Korean pancakes were really nice, well fried not too oily and very flavourful. Essentially resembling a well made seafood jeon. Served with the traditional dipping sauce which I thought went better with the jeon than the lemon remoulade. - ordered the assorted beef and wagyu BBQ sets which were really just tasting portions, rather pricey for the serving size. For each cut of meat they only gave literally a bite or tasting portion which is significantly less than a normal K-BBQ serving. The quality of the meat was decent but there was simply not enough to enjoy. The server would prepare the meat just like in a Korean establishment. - the kimchi stew was lacking something I couldn’t put my finger on it, either the stock wasn’t right but it was just lacking smth. Great for a cold Chicago day. The rice served was too dry, felt almost chewy and crunchy rather than soft. Had to soak the rice in the stew. - carrot cake with ginger ice cream. The ginger ice cream was really good and a great way of incorporating the ginger into the carrot cake. Very clever.

Highly recommend the upscale Korean BBQ experience PERILLA offers. The sets are a great way to try a variety of cuts. The crab scallion pancake was delicious but we struggled to find the king crab, so that’s the only note I had. Will return!

The restaurant is very beautiful with a great atmosphere, leaning towards a more luxurious vibe. The prices are high, but the food is quite delicious. We came as a pair and ordered the Wagyu set, which was actually enough to fill us up. But we also ordered extra beef and kimchi soup, so we ended up being too full.
