Customer Review Summary
Erie Cafe offers a spectacular outdoor space, well-maintained and inviting on nice days, although guests noted the need for yellowjacket control. While the staff is friendly and professional, they seem overworked, resulting in slow service for requests. Food reviews are mixed; the onion soup and salad received praise, while the garlic mashed potatoes disappointed. Some guests enjoyed their meals, such as the pork chops and creamed spinach, but others found steaks lacking flavor and sides unremarkable. Service inconsistencies were noted, particularly with some servers appearing impersonal or uninterested. Despite the beautiful atmosphere, several reviews highlighted instances of poor dining experiences, including issues with food poisoning. Overall, while the restaurant has good points, many guests felt it hasn't met their expectations, especially in a city known for its dining scene.

You cannot beat this outdoor space on a beautiful day. It is positively spectacular. The area is kept very clean and tables are spaced nicely and it has plenty of shaded areas. My only knock is that I would like to see a little more yellowjacket control in the late summer months. The staff is friendly and professional but they are taxed to the max, leaving a request for extras, etc. going unanswered so more assistants would nice to help them out. The onion soup was hot and the cheese was abundant and melted. It had a good balance of flavors without being salty. The salad with thousand island dressing was top notch. Nice and cold with fresh veggies and some of the best tasting dressing ever. I chose the pork chops and was not disappointed. They were cooked to perfection with a nice char. The garlic mashed potatoes left a little to be desired tasting less than rich with a little too much garlic and not enough salt. There was no creaminess to them. My vodka tonic was refreshing and easy to sip while enjoying the riverfront. If you looking for a relaxing place to enjoy the city and a delicious meal this is the place for you.

I have to say I wasn't impressed with this place. My wife and I went on our anniversary, which happens to be New years Eve. Our reservation was recognized, and we were seated right away. The decor is a little older, and the place is rather dim, but our server, whose name I didn't learn until I got the bill, was very impersonal. He had no personality and almost treated us as a burden, never checked on us really, and we felt ignored. As if that's not bad enough I got the bone in 34oz ribeye which I believe is $99 and it was cooked well but had no flavor at all and the menu didn't offer any add ons such as butter, crab, onions, mushrooms, etc. I will say the creamed spinach and lyonnaise potatoes were delicious, but I don't go to steakhouses for side orders. I am cut from the cloth of trying anything twice, but given that we were visiting from out of state and it being our anniversary, I must say I do not feel like I would return it was a bad 1st impression and my wife agrees so it's not just me.

Our group had a lovely, late night dinner here this evening. Amazing service, delicious food and portions. Johnny was amazing as the phenomenal staff was as well. Thank you for your accommodations and recommendations. Kudos to the beautiful singer for the birthday boys! Thanks for a memorable night!

Highly recommend. My husband and I had been walking around the city and riverfront area, so we’re dressed somewhat casually. We were somewhat hesitant because the restaurant was elegantly appointed. However, we were welcomed in and the atmosphere was so neighborhood friendly. Excellent food. Excellent service. Phenomenal real Chicago atmosphere. An authentic Chicago dining experience.

Good things first. The atmosphere, decor and vibe were great. It kinda feels like a super club. Lots of room and the staff was very accommodating. I ordered the 26 oz bone in New York strip. I ordered it well done. I said little to zero pink. I ate most of the steak and when I got closer to the bone it was extremely pink and red in color. The taste was not good very salty and no rub or seasoning on it. I put A1 sauce on it to give it flavor. The garlic mashed potatoes were also not very good. The taste was very bland. I had a baked potato it was good but the sour cream was gross. They give you a bread basket to start with and it was good. All the butter is in packets. I asked for butter for my baked potato it was in a packet. I had a bikini martini. It was delicious. I had a house salad to start. It was a salad with Italian dressing and it was good. My hubby got the Manhattan clam chowder, and it was okay. We added some salt to it and it got better. The absolute best thing we had here was the shrimp Dijon! The shrimp were flavored and cooked perfectly. It's a main course but we ordered it as an appetizer. Again it was delicious. For the 8 shrimp you get with it was $50.00. All and all for the two of us with tip was $400.00 in the City of Chicago.I would have expected better tasting food and experience. I have been to great steak places for a lot less and ate a better steak that I didn't need to coat in A1 sauce. Ending on a good note the staff was super friendly hard working staff. They have an outdoor area, it overlooks the water. So it's about 100 feet from the Erie entrance door. So the staff are constantly going back and forth. Like I said the staff was great and very hard working. Also they have free valet parking.

Out of town visitors celebrating NYE & 1 year wedding anniversary, we were actually married on 12/31 🥰. Anyway, the Chicago food scene never disappoints but this place was not it. The host and server assistant were kind, but it stopped there. Our servers personality was dry as a bone. I only learned his name (Martin) by reading it on the receipt. It almost seemed like it was painful for him to wait on us. I don’t need an overly friendly server but when paying $$$$ prices I expect a little more. I’m also aware NYE is a busy night but he was appeared to be friendlier with familiar faces. The side potatoes & side spinach both good, the bone-in ribeye was bland, was any salt, pepper, or butter used? We frequent Chicago as it’s not terribly far from St. Louis, I would not return here.

I had dinner with myself and another couple. We just stopped in for a bite to eat and a couple drinks before we went to a show. We sat at a table but when the waiter realized we would only be ordering 5 or 6 different appetizers he became annoyed. Service from that point fell off the gentleman never really came back to see how we were doing. Later that night I got violently ill from the calamari. I was not the only person to get ill three of the four people of our party ended up having food poisoning that evening. This used to be an amazing place where you could go for the ambience and great food with friendly people. Last couple times I've been it has been anything but that. Is it possible that this restaurant has been around so long that it's just time to close the doors. Living in the neighborhood I can tell you a lot of people have had unpleasant experiences there in the past year or so. Hopefully they can bring this place back to what it used to be there was a time this place was amazing people were friendly and the drinks were great. Unfortunately that time is not right now

I came to Erie Cafe with an open mind and reasonable expectations, but I was still left feeling disappointed. I will say that the restaurant has a nice ambience and the host was friendly. The service wasn't bad but our waiter seemed completely uninterested. Not a huge deal but a little strange in a restaurant of this price point. On the other hand, the staff treat the regulars with an almost comical level of hospitality. The contrast was glaringly obvious. The dining room is kept uncomfortably warm, and the bathroom felt like a sauna. The bread was fine. The crispy potatoes served with entrees felt uninspired, and were devoid of any seasoning, including salt. I ordered the minestrone soup, which I'd read positive reviews about but I found it to be on par with Campbell's. Would not recommend unfortunately.
