About Asador Bastian - steak house in Chicago, Illinois
Customer Review Summary
Asador Bastian is known for its excellent food and overall great experience, particularly the quality of steaks and certain dishes like the turbot and bone marrow mashed potatoes. However, some diners were disappointed with the service, which could be inconsistent and at times unaccommodating. Many found the prices high for what was delivered, with average steaks and mixed experiences regarding sides and appetizers. While the ambiance is praised as romantic, a sense of being rushed was noted, especially for first-time visitors. Some guests expressed discontent over changes to advertised menus and service mishaps during special events like Thanksgiving. Overall, many would recommend the restaurant for a premium steak experience, but expectations may need to be tempered regarding both the food and service quality.

Review: ★★★★☆ (4.5/5) I had high expectations coming into Asador Bastian, given its ranking as the 14th best steakhouse in the world, and overall, it delivered a great experience. The food was excellent—flavors were spot on, and the quality was undeniable. My steak, while flavorful, was slightly tougher than expected, which is why I’d rate it an 8.5/10. Service was generally good, though a bit inconsistent. My first bartender wasn’t as attentive as I would have liked, but the second more than made up for it—easily a 12/10 in terms of attentiveness and hospitality. At $250 for one person, it’s a premium experience, so I’m being a bit critical. That said, I’d absolutely come back and would recommend it to anyone looking for a top-tier steakhouse.

We dined here to celebrate a birthday and were overall disappointed. We most enjoyed the scallop appetizer and apple walnut salad. We would not recommend either potato dish. The steak was average and disappointing for the price ($200+ total). We tried two desserts and the swan was good; the cheesecake was phenomenal. The restaurant is beautiful and it was a nice date, but we do not plan to return. I was also a bit taken aback at the server’s reaction when I asked for a mocktail - he seemed annoyed.

The service is top notch. Our waiter made the experience personalized and was knowledgeable. You do have to choose your entire meal at once and I felt a little rushed having been our first time. When I go back I would skip the appetizers and even most of the sides (except the bone marrow potato puree-that was excellent) and order a couple entrees. We ended up splitting the Blackhawk F1 Japanese Waygu and Black Angus steak and we really could have each gotten our own or added a seafood over the apps and sides. The atmosphere is romantic and an exclusive vibe but a little on top of each other (not intentional but can easily to the table next door close). The wine list felt limited so we stuck with cocktails which were amazing.

Incredible food. The turbot was to die for. I don't think there are many places who can prepare turbot fish better than this restaurant. The risotto was average but the steaks were unbelievable. The aging on the meat was unlike any other place I have been and I have been to places... However, the service was nowhere suiting such a great restaurant. Servers with an unnecessary attitude, not even serving water on time or filling wine glasses that we had to do ourselves all night long. Overall, it was a good experience but this place could be much better...

We were quite excited for this place but the food unfortunately was just okay, nothing special. We got the akaushi steak which was a lot of inedible fat and served coldish room temp and the bone marrow potato purée as well. The truffle tortellini and the jamon croquettes were delicious. Service was amazing, quick and attentive. The old fashion was mid.

Surprised my husband for his birthday and it was the best decision. Hands down the best steak we’ve ever had in our lives! We had an A-5 12 wagyu steak - literally, by definition, the best. There are no steaks graded higher and there are only 2 places in the US that serve at such a level. The bone marrow mashed and tortilla are a must. Trust me. The service is also excellent. Truly. I’m admittedly horrific with names, but our waiter was just awesome (he had longer hair pulled back in a pony). He made my husband’s birthday expert.

I mean, if you have money falling out of your pockets, go for it. Like all uber expensive steak houses, this joint offers huge, unique, and expensive cuts of meat, and sides to share. They charge by the pound (pre cooked) and if you have to ask how much your steak will cost, this isn't the place for you. We went on a Friday night, but I can imagine this place is a favorite finance bro place where you show off your disposable money to your buddy. That being said, we enjoyed the experience. We recommend the blue fin carpaccio, the bone marrow mashed potatoes, and the amazing raspberry mille style dessert. We also loved the tortellini to course. Our service was good; we felt a bit hurried. We had a 6 pm reservation so I suspect they wanted us out before 8. I would prefer to spend the $600 for two we spent at a Michelin star restaurant with a tasting menu. I just didn't appreciate the expensive steak thing.

Came for the Thanksgiving experience. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this place but it was definitely underwhelming. First, they totally changed the menu from what they advertised on their website for this experience, several items were missing completely, for example I asked about the bone marrow mashed potatoes (which was a main reason I wanted to try this experience) and the server just kept saying “turkey comes with garlic mashed potatoes” and I had to repeat the question multiple times until she revealed it wasn’t available. So why try to deceive us? For $165/person you’d expect your menu would be honored the way you advertised it. And for the record, they never acknowledged their menu changed for this experience. Overall the food was okay but nothing to rave about, I have been to Basque Country in the past and I feel this misses the mark. Maybe it would’ve been a better experience if I came another time for their regular menu, I’ll never know because I probably won’t be back. Also, at the end I had some of my food boxed and after we paid they never brought my box so I had to get up and ask for it. Come here if you haven’t, but don’t expect too much except for a large bill.
