Customer Review Summary
Bastien's Restaurant offers a largely enjoyable dining experience, highlighted by its delicious steak selection, particularly the 20 oz bone-in ribeye, which is praised for its perfect cooking and flavorful sugar rub. The atmosphere is described as retro and cozy, reminiscent of a ‘Mad Men’ episode, contributing to a nostalgic dining environment. While several dishes like the bread pudding and banana cream pie received high acclaim, some sides like the twice-baked potato and house salad were seen as average. Service reviews are mixed; while some experiences noted excellent attention, others found staff to be distant or lacking warmth. Overall, the food quality and unique atmosphere stand out, with many patrons expressing a desire to return despite minor service issues.

We recently dined at Bastien’s Restaurant, and while there were some highs and lows, it was an overall enjoyable experience. Our reservation was for 7:30 pm, and upon arrival, we were seated near the kitchen door, which unfortunately didn’t offer the most pleasant view. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it wasn’t ideal. We ordered the 20 oz bone-in ribeye share plate with a house salad and the soup of the day. The steak was cooked beautifully, and the sugar rub they use really elevated the flavors. The sugar rub was only available for rare and medium-rare steaks and it was a nice touch that added something extra special to the meal. For dessert, we went with the bread pudding, and it was absolutely delicious! I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting—definitely a standout dish. One downside was our waitress, who wasn’t very friendly. She seemed a bit distant and less attentive than I would’ve expected, which detracted from the otherwise pleasant meal. Overall, despite the seating being a little less than perfect and the service lacking warmth, the food was fantastic, and the bread pudding was a real highlight. Would definitely consider coming back, but I hope for a more personable service experience next time.

The Steak is the way to go here. Got the 20oz nine in ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. Great grill marks consistently tender throughout the whole steak and the sugar rub added a perfect finish to this steak. I’d give it 9/10 for a steak. For the twice baked potato it was just okay wouldn’t recommend 6/10 nothing special. House salad good not great but it’s a salad 6/10. Surprisingly the roasted veggies the steak comes with had a great seasoning to them and I like the style 7/10. Cream brûlée 8/10 great flavor and love the vanilla bean in it but the Steak was worth it alone to come here.

The best way I can describe this Denver local legend is that it’s like being in an episode of Mad Men that takes place in a giant yurt, and I mean that in all the best ways. It’s retro, it’s cozy, it’s 1000% Colfax and they’ve done a really nice job keeping the nostalgia. Oh right and the food is pretty dang good too. As somebody else mentioned, the steak sandwich is the sleeper deal here if you need to save but want to taste what Bastien’s is known for. I got the sugar steak version and it was REAL GOOD, as was the service. Cheers up to this absolute relic 🍻!

I have lived in Denver for over 10 years and had driven past this place always wanting to try it. So grateful that I finally made it by this evening. Forget all the over priced steakhouses in Denver, this is the place you want go! Amazing food, nice atmosphere, great service. I just finished my meal and already looking forward to going back. Started off with the stuffed mushrooms 8.5/10, great flavor, the sauce was a little heavy. We also got the caprese tortellini 7/10. I would get both of them again. The steaks come with a soup or a salad. We both got wedge salad and I was very happy, the dressing was great. 9/10 on the wedge. The steaks were both perfectly cooked and flavor 10/10. I got the 16oz strip and my favorite girlfriend had the 16oz bone in ny strip steak both 10/10. We ended with the banana cream pie, probably the second best I have had in my life! 10/10 on the pie. I am excited to be back to sample more of the menu.

Old school restaurant with an updated flair. Food was awesome. The sugar rub was fantastic and the Black & Tan was super tasty. Couldn't have asked for a better server. It's a family run establishment that has been around 88 years. All around it was great experience.

Food was outstanding from beginning to end. Worth every penny, but also fairly priced! Loud place, not stuffy. It was great! Wedge salad is awesome. We got a ny strip sugar style and a Coulotte, which was so tender. Highly recommended a plain Coulotte.

After years of driving by and seeing the sign for "sugar steak," I had to stop in and find out what the heck that was. Turns out, it's a steak with a sugar based rub. I didn't enjoy the rub, finding it detracted from the steak's flavor. That said... Wow, this place is awesome. The prices on their steaks were significantly cheaper than those of a typical a la cart steak house, and came with potatoes, veggies, and a small salad. The other steak prep options were plentiful, if a bit eccentric at times (one came with a breakfast on top!?). The real standout was the atmosphere. The building is just cool. The bar is sunken, there's a half basement, and a second floor. Thick ropes of Christmas lights are strung around some of the edges. Old school posters of the groups like the Rat Pack hang from the walls, a long with reviews and news articles going back as far as the 70s. Other than the sugar rub, we found all the food to be wonderful. Service was friendly, and the prices were under what I would expect from a steak house with its caliber of food. I'll definitely come back.

My group came here for a holiday party with the upstairs area all to ourselves. I couldn't be happier with the service we received. All of the food was great as were the cocktails and wine. We all had a great time and I hope we come again next year.
