About TANTO Japanese Restaurant - steak house in Sunnyvale, California
Casual Japanese spot for drinking beer or sake & dining on popular dishes like fried rice balls.
Customer Review Summary
TANTO Japanese Restaurant offers authentic Japanese cuisine with a unique sake selection. The menu features a variety of sushi, sashimi, rolls, and fried dishes, but portions are small, making it ideal for sharing among four people. The restaurant is small and can get crowded, so reservations are highly recommended, especially since it’s a popular spot. While some reviewers rave about specific dishes like gyu tan and eel, others find the food average or even spoiled, citing issues with freshness and flavor. Favorites include chikuwa, grilled onigiri, and kinako mochi ice cream, with many praising the reasonable pricing and casual dining experience. Expect long wait times on weekends, though booking a table online is convenient. Overall, the quality is good but not exceptional, with mixed reviews on the overall dining experience.

Authentic Japanese food with some unique selection of sake. Sushi, sashimi, rolls, fried, pot, pan fried, you have all the options to pick from. The portion is on the small side. It is ideal to have 4 people so that you could share the varieties of food. Restaurant is small, so it is a crowded. Do make reservations ahead of time, the restaurant is a pretty popular spot.

Not sure why it’s so popular in South Bay, probably because it’s cheap? Average taste tbh

Gyu tan (grilled beef tongue) is soooo good. Anything eel related is amazing. Yaki Onigiri also really good. I would highly recommend reserve ahead of time to avoid waiting. This place is really popular and there’s likely a long wait if you show up without reservation. I used google to reserve and google assistant called to book for me. The booking was really easy to do.

This restaurant is extremely overrated! The food is neither fresh nor flavorful. Today, I ordered two fish dishes, and both were clearly spoiled—tasting like they'd been sitting in the fridge for over a month. The potato gravy and crab were no better; they tasted old, like they were reheated for just a few minutes before serving. Overall, the food is overpriced and unappetizing. Avoid this place! 太塔马难吃了!没吃过答辩的可以来吃一下

Tanto has been a family staple to go to for years. Very traditional authentic Japanese food. Their chikuwa, grilled onigiri, shishamo, kani cream croquette, ika sugataiyaki, and tai nitsuke steamed dishes are amazing. Mentaiko pasta is just like in those Italian Japanese fusion restaurants. Sashimi moriawase is standard. If you have room try the desserts. I love kinako and they have kinako mochi ice cream that hits the spot. They do take reservations so recommend trying to get one before going in as there is always a wait.

Favorites: Sashimi Salad, Beef Tongue, Hamachi Kama Great Japanese restaurant 👌they have a lot of small plates to share, it is like Japanese Tapas. Everything we tried was delicious. The pricing is reasonable.

Long line for weekend dinner. Waited for 1.5 hours when arriving at 5:30. There are not many seats. The size is good. The quality is above average but not remarkable. I would go again if there's no line. I recommend the Gyu Don.

You can easily book a table online or just give the restaurant a call. Our group of four made a seamless entrance on time thanks to the reservation. They've got a diverse menu with nearly everything covered. The'Unagi Omelette 鰻魚玉子燒,' 'Yamaimo Sengiri 山藥紫蘇', and the 'Mentaiko Pasta 明太子麵' are my favorite. The beef tongue and clam soup were also delicious. If you're into Japanese food with a local casual dining feel, this place comes highly recommended! Plus, they have private booths for a more intimate family or friend gathering.
