About Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House | Temple City - steak house in El Monte, California

Customer Review Summary

Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House in Temple City offers a luxurious all-you-can-eat shabu shabu experience with a focus on high-quality wagyu beef and seafood. The restaurant has an intimate setting suitable for small groups, along with a reservation system that caters to its popularity. Exceptional service, especially from attentive waitstaff like Bryant and Colin, greatly enhances the dining experience. While the A5 wagyu beef is highly praised, some menu items like the soup bases did not meet expectations. The restaurant features a visually impressive seafood platter, though some seafood items like snow crab were criticized for their taste and preparation. Prices can be high, with the $78 per person charge potentially leading customers to question the overall value. Despite some criticisms regarding ambiance and space for larger groups, the overall experience is positive, with many reviews recommending Mikiya for wagyu enthusiasts. Overall, Mikiya is a solid choice for a premium Japanese dining experience, offering high-quality ingredients and attentive service, but may not be ideal for those seeking casual dining or lower prices.

I've had the pleasure of dining at two Chubby Club restaurants: Wagyu House by the X Pot and Chubby Cattle Monterey Park, both of which exceeded my expectations. Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House, another Chubby Club establishment, also boasts an excellent reputation, but with a separate membership program. It's a minor inconvenience. Similar to Chubby Cattle MP, Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House is an intimate setting, making it less suitable for large groups. However, the restaurant's reservation system is a huge advantage, especially considering its popularity. I would like to give a HUGE PROP to Bryant, our exceptional waiter. His attentive, friendly, and welcoming demeanor made our dining experience truly amazing. His outstanding service is a valuable asset to the restaurant, and I hope his contributions are recognized. As an all-you-can-eat wagyu shabu house, Mikiya delivers top-notch service & food quality, on par with other Chubby restaurants. If you're a wagyu beef fan, this restaurant is an absolute must-visit. We opted for the diamond tier, which granted us unlimited access to their entire menu. Each plate featured 2-3 slices of premium Japanese A5 wagyu beef. Bryant recommended starting with the diamond tier beef and seafood platter; we also ordered sweet shrimp, wagyu tartare, wagyu bone marrow, and foie gras. The sweet shrimp was exceptional and the wagyu bone marrow was fantastic. However, the wagyu tartare and foie gras didn't quite meet my expectations. The seafood platter was visually stunning (IG worthy?) and featured an impressive array of scallops, oysters, shrimps, fish, abalone, and snow crabs. The scallops, oysters, and abalone were fresh and delicious, we even ordered an additional set. However, the snow crab was somewhat fishy, and the lack of tools to crack it open was inconvenient. The A5 wagyu beef was unparalleled, and I highly recommend upgrading to the diamond tier. The value is exceptional, especially when compared to X Pot. Bryant suggested trying the silver tier Australian wagyu beef to compare the difference, and the disparity was quite distinct. While the Australian wagyu beef was still impressive, the Japanese A5 wagyu beef was top-rated for a reason. At the end, I did not purchase a membership, primarily due to the underwhelming soup bases. We chose the spicy miso and Japanese tomato, but they failed to add any notable flavors to our meal. Condiments were good but not amazing. Considering these factors, I would rate Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House 4.5 stars. While the restaurant boasts exceptional service and food quality, the intimate setting and limited table space made the dining experience feel more hectic. Nonetheless, this is a solid recommendation for wagyu beef fans!

Expensive AYCE Shabu that’s come with 3 tier of pricing. The top tier beef is very tasty and literally melt in your mouth. I would suggest getting the mid or top tier because the lower tier quality you can probably get it elsewhere for cheaper. They offer sides but it’s limited to few items. You will only get 90 mins of time but the service is very quick to bring out dishes, so it’s sufficient. Overall it’s very pricey but offer high quality beef that you would not see in lower price restaurants, plus it’s ayce! We end up spending $150+tips for 2 people.

Mikiya Wagyu Shabu Hot Pot is simply amazing, and I can't believe I haven’t reviewed it until now! I first visited on the third day of their grand opening while on a business trip, and the buzz surrounding this place was immense—the line was huge, and the wait time was about two hours. But with that kind of crowd right after opening, you can tell they’ve built a solid reputation. I stayed in California for a couple of weeks, and since Temple City was only 30 minutes away from where I was staying, I had to go back for a second round. My first experience was shockingly good! They offer various tiers of Wagyu beef, and each level comes with different pricing and, in some cases, an incredible seafood platter. Their menu has one of the most high-end selections of seafood items I’ve seen in any hot pot restaurant. Despite how busy it was, the service was top-notch. The staff were attentive to every single detail, and the cleanliness of the restaurant was outstanding. The ambiance is perfect—clean, neat, and welcoming, making it a great spot for family gatherings or friends’ get-togethers. Each person has their own pot, so you can customize your experience and cook however you like. Everything they bring out is fresh, and the quality of the meat is impeccable. As someone who has traveled to Japan and enjoyed food all over the world, I can confidently say that Mikiya Wagyu Shabu Hot Pot stands out. They don’t need to over-advertise—everything here speaks for itself. I ended up going twice within a week because it was just that good! If you're ever in California, this spot is highly recommended. I hear they’re franchising in different locations now, so wherever I am, if I see one, I’ll definitely stop by. Bravo to Maya Wagyu Shabu Hot Pot!

High quality Wagyu beef! We were surprised that the qualify of the ingredients were pretty good considering it’s a AYCE Shabu Shabu place. Both the beef and seafood were fresh. We’ve ordered different cuts of meat, but they served all at once without noting which is which. Wish the server could have at least let us know verbally, but instead he seems in a rush. We came on a weekday afternoon and it wasn’t busy at all that there were only two tables (including us) of diners. Overall experience was still very satisfying with the quality of the food and highly recommended!

A solid place to get AYCE shabu shabu. Chubby Group owns this spot and they are also behind X-POT and Wagyu House. Service is very attentive, meats kept coming and everything was delicious. The side dishes and special dishes are good. When ordering the seafood, don't order all the sets as once, it's a large sharable plate of seafood, pace yourself. I highly recommend this place for AYCE Shabu Shabu.

Wow this place is good. I don't think you actually eat that much meat by weight because everything is sliced and served super thin. No matter, it's all high quality and super tasty. Each of the courses comes with plenty of options and you will leave feeling stuffed.

Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House: A Luxe Shabu Experience with Mixed Feelings Is premium wagyu worth the splurge for shabu shabu? Mikiya Wagyu Shabu House in Temple City aims to answer that question with a resounding yes, but the verdict might depend on your wallet and expectations. As a chef always on the hunt for exceptional dining experiences, I ventured here with family, trading our usual Oseyo in Pasadena for Mikiya's promise of wagyu indulgence. The bustling atmosphere speaks to its popularity - reservations are a must, and patience is required even then. The Good: - Meat Quality: The mid-tier special offered a comprehensive beef selection. While delicious, the wagyu's superiority over standard shabu meat was subtle. - Seafood Platter: A standout addition that added variety to our hot pot. - Service: Exceptional. Our server, Colin, navigated us through the menu with expertise and attentiveness. The Not-So-Good: - Value: At $78 per person before tax and tip, the $250 bill for three left us questioning the cost-to-experience ratio. - Sauces: The ponzu and sesame dips were oddly sweet, lacking the depth expected from a premium shabu spot. - Ambiance: The club-like music felt out of place and detracted from the dining experience. Final Thoughts: Mikiya offers a fun, upscale twist on shabu shabu, but at a price that's hard to justify for regular visits. The all-you-can-eat format, while generous, seems at odds with the premium meat concept. For wagyu lovers with deep pockets, it's worth trying once. For others, the standard shabu spots might offer better value without sacrificing much in quality. Would I return? Perhaps, but I'd opt for a lower-tier menu and save the splurge for special occasions. In the shabu showdown, Oseyo still holds the crown for my go-to spot.

OVERALL EXPERIENCE: My first time was at their Cerritos location, so I wanted to check out their Temple City location. Came twice in one week LOL... definitely enjoyed it! The number to the restaurant does not direct you to the host, which is a bit frustrating... AMBIANCE: Noise level is average. A bit disappointed that they don't have a big enough table for more than 4 ppl. For a table of 5, they put one chair at the end of a table of 4. Not a fan, just because there are a lot of dishes that come out, so there isn't enough space. They placed our party back to back (which is better than being separated). The table by the entrance is not ideal (super close to the entrance, ppl waiting inside crowd the table, and ppl smoking right outside make for an unpleasant experience). ORDERED: - Silver Wagyu Set. We selected the spicy miso and sukiyaki broth. - For the Special Dishes: Wagyu Bone Marrow and Wagyu Tartare. A bit disappointed that the tartare came with chips. I think wontons would've been better. Sweet Shrimp was fresh! Wagyu Nigiri was good! - The quality of meat was delicious and the veggies were all fresh! - Seafood Platter was fresh! I especially enjoyed the scallop and abalone. (this is not AYCE, you only get the platter once). - Ice cream: vanilla, matcha, strawberry (sad they didn't have coffee at this location) DIFFERENCES FROM CERRITOS: - they don't have a self-service bar like Cerritos. whatever you want, they will get it for you. - the spicy clams came in their shell, whereas Cerritos did not (prefer them without the shell) - wish they had coffee ice cream at Temple City SERVICE: Service was phenomenal! All the servers were friendly and attentive. The food was brought out quickly! Maybe that's bc you have a 90min time limit LOL PRICE: ~ $55 PARKING: plenty of parking in the plaza (additional underground) Food: 5/5 stars Service: 5/5 stars Venue: 5/5 stars
