Customer Review Summary

Basque Norte receives mixed reviews from diners. Some highlight the exceptional service and a cozy atmosphere, enjoying dishes like steaks and lamb chops prepared to perfection. Family-style dining is praised for its variety and generous portions of complementary sides. However, the restaurant is criticized for being overpriced, particularly for the main meat dishes, with some expressing disappointment in flavor and quality. Specific dishes, such as the garlic tomato soup and over-seasoned chicken, received negative feedback for lack of taste and poor preparation. While many recommend trying the restaurant for its unique experience and well-cooked meats, others feel uncertain about returning due to inconsistent food quality. Overall, the experience varies greatly depending on individual dishes and expectations.

It's hard to want to promote this restaurant. On one end, I am basque, and love to enjoy the atmosphere and cooking. But, it also feels incredibly overpriced. While you do get a variety of free sides, I feel the price of the meats is way over market. Their special, a braised lamb shank, had little to no flavor. It doesn't help their menu hasn't changed in over 20 years. It's not the worst restaurant, but it's certainly one I wouldn't want to spend $50+ at in Chico

The best family style, 7 course, comfort food feeling experience I've had!!! This place is awesome, most bang for your buck, and supremely delicious! The steaks are simply perfect, no sauces necessary, and the sides take you home!

Food was delicious with the exception of the garlic tomato soup. I feel like it needs more of a tomato base to it. It's very garlic forward. Otherwise, everything was so, so yummy! Our server has worked there 16 years. And she was amazing. You can tell she can run circles around the others.

Great service! The food was great, although the spicy sausage beans side tasted like they were plain beans seasoned with water and a whole bottle of dried spices. Not our favorite side. Steak was beautifully cooked and the ribs were fall off the bone perfect. Atmosphere was kinda dim and very loud, but nothing wrong with that. Just something to be aware of. Loved giving this place a try and having the experience, not sure if it’s a place we will frequent but have recommended to many friends to try!

Attended our company Christmas Dinner here, they were able to accommodate our large group (with reservations far ahead of time). We had excellent service and phenomenal food! Dinner was served family style in multiple courses, everything was great! My husband and I ordered the porterhouse and it was perfectly cooked medium rare, so flavorful and tender! My sister in law ordered the lamb, I tried a bite and it was amazing as well! Would definitely go again!

We came in as party of 3 with a reservation. We were seated right away, and server took our drink order. We all got basque style dinner with Sauteed Shrimp, Calamari, and Chicken Breast. Course comes with excellent soup, salad, baked beans, green beans, garlic pasta, potatoes, and ice cream. Was little salty but very rich, very good food. All the sides can be ordered more for free! Sauteed Shrimp was fantastic. Great wine, garlic and butter flavor with succlent shrimps. Chicken breast was way over seasoned and well done. Was dry. Pilaf rice on the bottom was good. Calamari was what you would expect. Lightly battered, seasoned well. Pilaf on the bottom as well. Our server was amazing, we asked lots of questions and she was more than happy to answer with a big smile. Attentive as well. $100 for the 3 of us with great quality food and service.

I was really excited to try this place but unfortunately was super disappointed by the food, which is not cheap due to their courses style. To be clear, the restaurant itself was fine and the service was excellent. I’m not sure if it was just an off day for the chef since it has so many good reviews or if it’s just not my taste. Course 1: garlic tomato soup: I love garlic and I love tomato soups, but both me and my date found this inedible. I thought maybe would be better with bread, it wasn’t. Course 2: salad, fava beans and angel hair pasta with (I think) garlic oil on it: salad dressing wasn’t great, but this is probably what I ate the most of. Beans were fine, but I don’t usually just eat beans by itself. The pasta was overcooked and since it was just in a light oil had no flavor. Main course: we both got chicken piccata, the chicken was overcooked (better over than under at least) but had decent flavor. This course comes with red potato’s and green beans- which I didn’t try after the first couple courses. Complimentary vanilla ice cream- small portion, good ice cream, this was the highlight of the meal for sure. Overall I’m not sure I would go back to try again, but would like to reiterate the service and atmosphere was excellent and with as many good reviews as they have, it could’ve just been an “off” night.

My friends have asked me, "Why haven't you reviewed Basque Norte?" I tell them the same thing... "Why continue to detail perfection?" It's now time. After suffering through 2 bouts of COVID19, I NEEDED an outstanding meal to get my taste buds back on track. Date night and reservations for 2. My wife started off with a Sangria, and I ordered an Old Fashioned (best in town) then made our way to the menu to choose our entree. 1st course was the Tomato & Garlic Bisque, which was sheer perfection and full of tomato puree and garlic chunks. 2nd course was the salad, pasta, and beans... ALL perfectly prepared and full of flavor, especially the beans which included spicy sausage. The pasta had plenty of butter and seasoning to ensure nothing went home. 3rd course consisted of the seasoned green beans and potatoes. We did ask for a second round of the green beans, as they were THAT GOOD. Main Course was next. My wife ordered the Ribeye (rare), and I ordered the Lamb Chops (rare). To even speak ill of the preparation/seasonings/ and cooking would be blasphemy. Fresh garlic butter was piled on my chops, and Her steak was prepared better than just about ANY steakhouse in Chico can provide. This is THE place to take a date, your spouse, or a party just for the Tapas. Pricey... but SO worth it!! There's not enough high praise to give this restaurant, the servers, bartenders, or owner. Just eat here once for the truth!! Did I forget the free small bowl of ice cream? Enjoy... and believe!!
