About Altura Bistro - steak house in Anchorage, Alaska

Relaxed restaurant serving Mediterranean & American dishes in an old-school white-tablecloth space.

Customer Review Summary

Altura Bistro offers a creative and exquisite dining experience with a relaxed ambiance. The food is consistently praised as top-notch, though the Australian wagyu did not measure up to Japanese wagyu. Service is noted for being friendly, fast, and professional, enhancing the overall enjoyment. Highlights include perfectly cooked scallops, black cod, halibut, and a specialty gnocchi in aged Parmesan sauce. However, some dishes were served cold, and there were concerns about undercooked fish. The burger and chicken sandwich received rave reviews, particularly for takeout. Many diners consider it a hidden gem, appreciating the fresh oysters and unique brussels sprouts. The complimentary bread and whipped butter are well-received, and desserts like the dark chocolate torte and crème brûlée are delightful. Overall, the restaurant garners mixed feedback regarding value for price but is highly recommended for its food and service.

Pretty exquisite and food was creatively crafted. Well done. The Australian wagyu wasn't was great compared to Japanese Wagyu. But that is just the meat.. not the restaurant nor the chef. Overall great experience!! Thank you

The food is absolutely top notch. The service is friendly, fast and professional. The restaurant ambiance isn’t fancy, but it’s relaxed. The sound levels are moderate and would work well for a date or business dinner. Our group didn’t try any of the beef dishes, but the scallops, black cod and halibut were perfectly cooked with rich and tasty sauces that matched a nice white wine perfectly. We had the gnocchi with an aged Parmesan sauce as an appetizer I could have happily stuffed myself with as a main course. The only dish that didn’t wow me was an orange fennel salad. That said, they served absolutely superb coffee made with a French press at the table.

It was okay, not sure it was worth the price for anyone in our party of 4. Reservations asked which dining room we wanted; rooms are merely separated by a beam. Booths were very tight and we are not large people. Scallops were cooked perfectly and the flavors were great, however the food came out cold. The gnocchi they advertise as a specialty was worth it. The steak was a great dish. The biggest disappointment came from one in our party that ordered the cod, it was under cooked and sent back. When it returned it was the same piece of fish. I really would not expect that from any restaurant.

The first time I came here, I wasn’t really impressed. I’m glad I gave it another chance. It has become our favorite restaurant in town. Dine in options are fantastic along with takeout. The seafood and steaks are superb. The Altura burger is by far one of the best burgers I have had and the chicken sandwich is a close second favorite when ordering takeout for lunch or dinner.

We found this place by accident on our last night in Anchorage and it was the best meal we had our entire trip. When other reviewers say this is a hidden gem, they aren't kidding. Don't let the strip mall deter you. We started with fresh oysters in a foamy mignonette, and they were fantastic. Then we ate the most delicious brussels sprouts that I think we've ever tasted - so crispy with Asian flavors of miso and soy with cilantro on top. We each ordered fish as our entree. I had black cod and my husband ordered halibut. Both dishes were so good that we shared them. Save room for dessert, if you can. We ended the meal with their dark chocolate torte and ice cream. Their wine list is also quite extensive. Their servers are informative and friendly and they all help each other. Once we returned from our vacation, I knew I had to write a review of Altura. If we return to Anchorage, it will be the first place where I make reservations.

My co- worker dropped my off Friday afternoon and she headed home. I was not expecting this fine dining experience from a Bistro. I had the Octopus and it was tender and delicious. I will come back to try the Halibut. I heard the couple at the next table talking over the menu, we have tried this or that, let's try x this time or repeat x becuase it was delicious.

Altura Bistro (Anchorage) This is my first review and first time eating at Altura. I would describe it as a seafood and steakhouse . You get free bread and butter. Which were yummy , the bread was warm, soft and fluffy and the butter was whipped with black salt. The service was excellent. The servers were attentive and the food came fast and perfectly timed. Such as we finished the bread , the app came , we finished the app, the entrees came . We ordered .... Drinks : wine based cocktails. It was a good drink and squeeze the lime in the drink and it's better appetizer : pork belly . Pork belly has crispy ends and juicy inside. It was on top of a bed of cabbages that had vinegary dressing. Entree: chicken confit . I liked the ravioli and the chicken was cooked perfectly with crispy skin. It was saltier than I liked. New York steak . Cooked perfectly to medium rare and delicious . It came with potatoes. Dessert: creme brulee . It comes with a garlic crumble but it tastes like chocolate which was nice ! Overall a 4.5/5 rating . Would come back again

Come for amazing food! Gina was awesome. So knowledgeable and fun! We enjoyed the fresh oysters, Butternut Squash Salad, Prawn Bisque, King Crab Mac and Cheese and Weathervane Scallops. The Sesame Meringue Tart was a perfect ending! Thanks for a great dining experience in Alaska!
