About Kinsmith - steak house in Montgomery, Alabama
Customer Review Summary
Kinsmith offers a beautifully decorated dining experience within the historical Murphy House, with a contemporary boutique vibe at the Trilogy Hotel. Guests have praised the food, particularly the steak and eggs, but noted issues with service quality, such as unprofessional waitstaff and delays. There were complaints about cleanliness and organization, with some tables not being properly cleaned and long waits for food. While many enjoyed the atmosphere and unique dishes like the Brown Butter Barbecue Shrimp and malted buttermilk pancakes, inconsistencies in service have led to a mixed overall impression. I ate at Kinsmith before my late check out after my 40th Birthday surprise dinner party. It was a nice secluded weekend. The steak and eggs were tasty. Not to mention the mimosas. The walk from my room to the restaurant was a scenic view.

There was a moderate size party (8), 2 singles & us. And yet it took the waiter about 7-10 minutes to approach. No greeting, just what do you want to drink. Mind you the table we were set at, had 1 of 4 glasses with a partial glass of water. It was clearly a used glass of water at the table. We let him know & got no apology. He took the glass away though. We asked him about drinks & got an unclear response. The waiter also approached us with an ear bud in. Completely unprofessional & this is a nice restaurant. Server had a McDonald’s approach if you know what I mean. We left, saw him the hall. Told him we were leaving & he just said okay. Not a single question as to why we abruptly left.

Last minute reservation with over 22 of my colleagues and they accommodated all guest. Shootout to Emily for her professionalism getting us seated and fed. The food was great. The Brown Butter Barbecue Shrimp where amazing. I had the Gulf Seafood Risotto for and entree. The restaurant is located in the Hotel Trilogy. The hotel looks amazing. Very contemporary boutique hotel. I can't wait to come back.

It's a beautifully decorated restaurant that is located inside the historical Murphy House that was built in 1851. If anything, you really need to see what the Trilogy Hotel has done to revitalize this space. Everything about this place just lures you in with their grand foyer leading you to the staircase. There is a full bar area to the right at the entrance, and the actual restaurant is near the staircase to the left. I wouldn't have known it was there, if not for the banner hanging from the mansion. I did glance over the dinner menu the first time I visited. It's a varied mix of southern with a little creole, but at a gourmet level. I was only in Montgomery for a short period of time. All I could do was try it for breakfast. If you're staying in the hotel on the weekend, then you may want to try their brunch. The Oxtail Benedict definitely caught my eye. The breakfast menu is limited. It's a hotel restaurant, so keep that in mind. I initially wanted the Kinsmith Omelet that I've read about. They were out of the pimento cheese. I ended up getting the Steak and Eggs. Everything was cooked exactly the way I ordered it. The steak usually is the highlight, but it was the biscuits and housemade jams that were the star on this plate. I would have liked the steak more had it not been marinated. I think I wasn't in love with the red-eye gravy. Other than that, I was happy with the rest of it. It was a very well presented meal with a mushroom, onion, & spinach stir-fry, and fresh fruit. But those buttermilk biscuits with the strawberry jam that had a touch of mint & basil was what won me over. The service was good as well. I actually wish I had taken her recommendation to get the Alabama Breakfast (the most popular item) with the Conecuh sausage. That's what I'll get next time. I was also blown away by the fact that they gave me some samples of jams to take with me. That was so sweet! They were all great. They should sell & package all of the flavors for tourists like me. I think it's cool that Marriott has two hotels housed within 3 historical buildings. I stayed at the SpringHill Suites which is next door to the Trilogy. The Trilogy (Autograph Collection) is more of a boutique hotel, but both have great historical architecture features and charm. It's in a historical area with lots of appeal. The breakfast at Kinsmith was good for a sit down meal versus a basic self-serve hotel breakfast. It's good to have both options in a Marriott property. I'd definitely revisit Kinsmith on my next trip to Montgomery.

My intent of this review is hopefully seen as constructive and not destructive. My previous review WAS 5 stars-Based on my first visit, but AFTER 6 total visits UPDATE: The place is overall just unorganized, dirty, and chaotic for a restaurant with just 12-14 tables. Points of contention: -having to pour my own coffee -8 of the 12 tables never fully cleaned my entire meal -servers discussing tips NOT left by previous customers -customers walking in had to stand awkwardly beside us while manager cleaned table for them -haphazard management and servers *Manager did recognize shortcomings and offered a complimentary mimosa. TAKEAWAY: Excellent food/quality, poor service, and overall poor professionalism of staff. I feel (and hope) this place can correct these errors to be a true asset to downtown Montgomery. I will not be back.

A lack of leadership and training is immediately obvious. This beautiful, antebellum building deserves a better business! Ninety minutes after ordering and sixty minutes after last seeing our waiter, I decided to ask about our food. Only at that point did anyone mention that our waiter had left, but our order was ready. How long had it sat there? Probably a long time, because the food was dry, but the order was completely wrong. Despite this terrible experience, I really wish this team well. Montgomery needs this place to be successful! Please raise the game.

Had brunch here with some friends and loved it. The atmosphere is beautiful. Very soothing, sophisticated decor with lots of natural light. The service was friendly and the food was nice. The best thing anyone got was the malted buttermilk pancakes. Those were awesome. I’d highly recommend. This is definitely a special occasion place that I look forward to coming back to. It’s probably the most beautifully decorated space in Montgomery.

Lovely place to have breakfast in Montgomery. Wait to be seated. Waitresses are very friendly. Our was Saniya and she was so nice. She came over several times to check whether everything was ok. My husband ordered The Manhattan with English muffin and I had the Alabama breakfast with cheesy grits. Highlights was for the Manhattan was its cream cheese mixed with pesto and for the Alabama breakfast its biscuit. It was so soft and moist. Delish. Definitely worth the visit, even though there was bit of a confusion about finding the entrance (through the hotel door, to the left of the reception desk) and opening hours (not 24h!!!), but 6.30am-10.30pm during the week and 7am-2pm during the weekend.
